That sounded heavenly to her.
Chapter Four
She jolted awake when a car door slammed. “Oh, my God, I fell asleep on you.” She tried to scramble off his lap, but he just tightened his hold on her.
“Easy. I enjoyed it.”
She shook her head. “Your legs are probably tired of having me on them.”
“You hardly weigh anything,” Nate said. “I carried backpacks that weighed more than you for miles.”
“I need to get back.”
He lifted her off his lap, stood, and took her hand. She was shocked when she walked back into the living room. Everyone was gone, and the place was immaculate except for the stack of boxes in one corner.
“Someone left a note taped on the door,” Nate said. “It’s Cole. He said we don’t have anything to do besides eating the mountain of food they left in the fridge and resting. They said they’d see us tomorrow and they’d bring breakfast. Jade drew a bunch of hearts on the note.”
Tessa teared up when she saw that. She’d always thought she’d be alone.
“How about some food, baby?”
She pressed on her stomach. “I don’t know if I can eat.”
“I want you to try. You haven’t eaten anything but the half piece of toast this morning.”
Tessa nodded.
They opened the fridge door, and she gasped. It was crammed with food. “We won’t be able to eat all of that.”
Nate chuckled. “That is a lot of food.”
“I want to make up plates for the two women who helped set it up and an older gentleman down the street. He’s housebound.”
“I think that’s very sweet.”
There was a knock on the door.
“I’ll go get that,” she said.
“I’ll start making up plates for us. Anything you don’t like?”
She shook her head.
Tessa opened the door, and Gary stormed in and then turned around. She closed the door and faced him. “What do you want, Gary?”
She wasn’t the least afraid, especially when Nate came and stood a few feet behind him and crossed his massive arms over his chest. Gary had no clue, and she had to bite her lip to keep from smiling.
“Sweetheart, I want to apologize for how I acted,” Gary said. “My only excuse is that I’m deeply in love with you and want you to marry me.” He got down on one knee and held out a box.
Tessa tasted blood when she bit down harder after seeing Nate roll his eyes.
“You know I can treat you like a princess.”
“Gary.”
“Don’t say no,” he said.
Nate cleared his throat. “She’s going to have to say no, Gary.”
