His jaw clenches. “She’s pissed.”
I suck in a sharp breath. Pissed? Fuck no, she’s beyond pissed. “I had everything worked out, Rome. Then Makenna stuck her nose in my business, and now I doubt she’s going to want to let me through the fucking door.”
I grip the wheel tighter, my knuckles turning white. “Gabriella got scared and ran. I get it. Fuck, Rome, I get why she did it. It doesn't excuse her for keeping my son from me, but I get why she ran. The shit Makenna pulled today, she could run again.” The thought of losing her once again has my gut clenching.
“I fucking figured out why it was hard for us to find her. She’s not under Sanchez anymore; she’s under Ranieri. She changed her fucking name,” he spits, angry that we didn’t figure this shit out before. “We should have just asked Mal. That fucker would have told us.”
I scoff. “You mean the same man who stood against his aunt today?” That shocked the fuck out of me. Usually, the Gallagher’s are united, but Makenna chose the wrong person to go against. Gabby and Raylee are close, and in turn, Malcolm is with her too.
“What’s with the dude they’re talking about—Christian?” Rome questions.
My nostrils flare at the sound of the asshole’s name. “He’s Malcolm’s best friend and right-hand man. Seems as though there was something between him and Gabriella.”
“Do you think—” he begins.
“Not a fucking chance,” I hiss as I cut him off. I know Anthony is my son. I don’t need a DNA test to confirm it. You just have to look at the boy and see he’s mine.
“We have to ask,” he says quietly.
I don’t answer him. Sure, I get that he, along with Dante and Makenna, are worried this could turn bad and Anthony isn’t mine, but none of them know Gabby’s not like that. She’s fucking innocent and pure. The woman is everything I’m not. She’s the one I have wanted, child or not. She was always going to be mine.
I pull up to the rental house and take a couple of steadying breaths. Right now, I feel as though I could take everyone out. They’ve fucked up today and they need to accept that.
I walk into the house just as Dante pulls up outside. I don’t spare him a look. I can’t. If I do, I may end up going at him. When they walk in, I’m already pacing the room like a caged animal.
“I get that you’re pissed,” Dante says.
“Pissed?” I echo. “Do you have any idea what the fuck your wife has done?” I snarl. My anger is now coming out.
“Watch it,” Makenna warns.
“You are not my boss,” I growl. “You are not the head of the Famiglia. I do not need to watch my tone with my sister-in-law.”
Holly takes a seat, her eyes wide and her face pale.
In the years that Dante and Makenna have been married, I have always treated her as the boss. Not once have I made the distinction that they’re two separate entities, until today.
“You fucked up,” I hiss. “You were a bitch, plain and simple. You knew Gabriella was Joe’s daughter, and you still called her a whore. What the fuck is wrong with you?”
I have to know what was going through her mind. What she really thought she was achieving by doing this.
“I didn’t call her a whore,” Makenna snaps. “I said how do we know the child is yours. It’s a valid question, don’t you think? Maybe one you should be asking also.”
“Did you look at my son?” I ask her, unable to keep the anger out of my tone. “If you did, you wouldn’t be asking me that fucking question.”
“Ales, you need to calm the fuck down and watch who you’re talking to,” Dante snarls as he steps a little in front of Makenna.
I grit my teeth. I need to unleash my anger, but right now, I need to go to Gabriella and fix things between us.
“You’ve got to see where we’re coming from, Alessio,” Dante says. The anger has left his eyes as he watches me. “I don't know this woman. This is not an insult to you or her, but how can you be so sure? Before today, we haven't even heard you mention Gabriella, let alone you getting her pregnant.”
Makenna steps beside her husband, her hand on his arm. “I saw you with her. You were different. The way you spoke to her was the way Dante speaks to me, and Rome speaks to Holly. She means something to you, and you never told us.” I see the hurt flash in Holly’s eyes as she nods in agreement with her aunt. “This family has been through Hell and back. And we're protective, and that means we're protective of you.”
I shake my head, still so angry. “You have no idea. I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for Gabriella. I wouldn't be alive. She's the one who saved me in Denver when I got shot. She was the one who made sure I stayed alive.”
“So you fucked her as a thank you?” Dante questions.
I don’t think; I move toward him and get into his face. The rage I’m feeling is batting against me. I want to kill him.
