“I was just asking her about birth control,” the doctor said.
“There will be no birth control.” My captor shot her a threatening look. “If you try to give her such, I’ll have your brain coating this room like a fresh paint job.”
“Alexie,” I said quietly, feeling compelled to protect the poor woman, “she was just asking if I were on any.”
He narrowed his gaze, but then his cell phone rang. Irritated, he stomped off.
Both me and the doctor breathed a sigh of relief. The man was so intense. His volatility was terrifying.
“I’m going to draw your blood.”
“For what?”
“I just want to run a couple simple tests and see why you’ve been feeling under the weather.”
She worked quickly, taking the sample back to her bag. She placed the blood in a vial and shook, then dipped a small strip into the mixed fluid. She read the strip and sighed.
I imagined I was vitamin deficient from all the vomiting. I ticked off the possibilities. Iron. Vitamin D. Vitamin B12…
“Da.”He hung up the cell and stalked over to the doctor. “What’s the verdict?”
“Pregnant.”
Alexie grinned.
I felt my jaw drop.
Alexie rushed over and lifted me from the bed. He hugged me tight and even spun me around in celebration.
Since I could not find my voice, I began to sob.
“What can I say, malishka? I’ve got virile semen,” he whispered in my ear, placing a kiss on my temple.

After Alexie’s men came to collect the doctor, he took my hand and dragged me out into the hallway and to an unfamiliar area of the house. I had yet to speak. I was that shocked. What could I say?
“I know the news is overwhelming, but I have something that might make you happy. Consider it a reward.”
This is not a bad thing,I told myself. This means he plans on keeping me around for at least nine months. That’s nine months to find a way to escape.
But did I want to escape? Where would I go? What would I do?
As I was tugged along, I gaped at my elegant surroundings. At least the kid would not want for anything.
At the end of the hall, there were double doors. Alexie pushed them open with flair, and I couldn’t hold back my shock. Hundreds of books lined every shelf. A large oak desk sat in the center of the room with the comfiest looking office chair pushed into it. There was a fireplace between two bookshelves with a mantle covered in small art pieces.
“Do you like it?” Alexie was gazing at me as I took it all in.
“It’s beautiful,” I gasped. My heart leapt in my chest.
Alexie walked me to a little nook on the opposite side of the room away from the fireplace. It was a book lover’s wet dream. A place where I could lie back and read embedded into the wall. It was covered in pillows so soft I thought if I touched them I would float away on a cloud. I shouldn’t be swooning, but I couldn’t help it.
“This is my second office. The one I use when I’m not attending business matters. I would like to invite you to use it as well. I figured you’d want to get away from being locked into a room all day long.”
My eyes filled with tears. “Thank you,” I whispered. The pounding in my chest grew louder to my ears as I inhaled his scent.
