The screen came to life, prompting me for a password. I’d passed through one barricade, but one more still remained.
I keyed in the first word that came to mind.
“Sprout.”
I hit enter, and I was at the desktop.
I was in.
Holy shit, I was in.
I had no idea what I was looking for. But whatever it was, it had to be on the computer somewhere. After checking the drawer again I spotted a portable hard drive, one among many. I plugged it into the USB port and, for lack of better options, dragged the entire contents of the computer’s drive onto it.
Minutes passed as it uploaded. Finally, the bar on the screen filled.
It was done.
I unplugged the drive and left the office, making sure it looked the way it had when I’d arrived. Then I hurried back to my room, stuffing the hard drive under the mattress of my bed.
My heart raced. I went back up to Jason’s bedroom, stripped out of my dress, and climbed back in.
I’d betrayed him. I was in bed with the man I was supposed to stab in the back. And what’s more, I likely had all the information I needed to do it. I felt sick to my stomach, like a total traitor.
I had no idea what I was going to do next. But I knew whatever I decided, there was no going back.
