“Agoodsurprise?” her tone dripped with disbelief.

“I think so, but you'll have to decide for yourself. Get up and get dressed. I'm excited,” I smacked her ass, and she rolled away from me with a shove.

She put on a lovely sweater dress that highlighted her curves and a pair of black tights that had my already rigid cock aching. I dressed beside her, my stomach filled with a pleasant type of anxiety.

“Where are we going?” she asked as I led her to the car. Our driver today was one of Hector’s men. Since the deaths of both my father and Dan, and my gaining the favor of the police force, Hector and my’s partnership became more robust than ever.

“It's a surprise.” I grabbed her hand and tugged her into the back seat, forcing her luscious ass into my lap. I grabbed a tangle of her curls and brought them to my nose, taking in her scent and breathing deeply for the first time in longer than I could remember, “You smell like sin.”

“Mason, tell me where we’re going,” she whined, and the sound made me desperate to drag it out of her for other reasons.

“Be patient, or I'll teach you some.” I tightened my hold on her hair, tipping her head to the side so I could kiss her neck.

She squirmed against me, teasing my cock with the cleft of her ass. She moaned as I bit her, “Why do I think I would like you teaching me patience?”

“Because you overestimate your ability to wait for release. You would hate it, baby. At least until you came. Then you'd think I was God, and you'd died on my cock.”

“Mason,” she repeated, grinding into me harder.

I reached around, pinching her nipple through her sweater, “Stop trying to force me to fuck you. I did something nice, and I want you to see it.”

She tried to stop wriggling but wasn’t entirely successful, “Now that things are settling down, all I want to do is fuck. Is this the honeymoon phase?”

“Me too, baby, so I’d say it is.” I kissed the side of her head and just kept her snuggled against me until we were a few blocks from the library.

Claire leaned up and then pushed entirely off me when she noticed our surroundings. I let her go, knowing she would calm down when she saw the surprise.

“You’re not! Don’t you dare tell me we’re going to the library!” Real panic warped her pretty features.

“It's going to be okay,” I promised, grabbing her hand and squeezing it tightly.

“I don’t think I can take it this soon...” she confessed in a sad whisper.

“You're going to have to, baby, but I'm right here, and everything will be okay.”

She tried to pull her hand free from mine, but I tightened my grip. Finally, she rolled her eyes at me and then turned to stare out the window. The silent treatment didn't last more than a minute.

“Why would I have to? Mason, why did you do this?” She was shaking, which didn’t entirely surprise me. That was why I kept this a surprise. She had been clear about her aversion to the place.

“Do you trust me, Claire?”

She hesitated for a moment before saying, “Yes, I do.”

We pulled up outside the library, “Then come on.”

My new office in City Hall was under construction, though that wasn't a matter of public record, and it was only fitting that Claire received a little of the same treatment. I grabbed her hand and led her grudgingly into the library.

The moment we stepped inside, her demeanor changed entirely. She was no longer shaking and nervous but curious. She could smell the beginnings of the changes to the building.

“Why are we here, Mason?”

I walked toward her office, ignoring the question. She followed me, less hesitant than she might have been had we gone to the basement first. I told the contractors to rush this job but get it done right. Claire's face widened in astonishment at the sight of her office. It was entirely redone, changed in every way to suit her tastes. The walls were a dusty soft pink, the furniture a dusty gray, and while it looked professional, it was decidedly feminine and bookish. A new plaque on her desk read Claire Sharp, Head Librarian.

“You did all this!?” her slender fingers pressed against her throat.

“Of course I did. You're the chairman of the board for the whole library, and the renovations begin next week. You need a proper office, and you need it now. This place isn't going to run itself.” She stared at the room with her mouth gaping open. I gently closed it for her and placed a kiss on her lips.

She shook off the haze caused by the surprise and kiss, “What renovations?” she asked with a soft, stunning smile on her face.
