“Caleb,” I say as I let out a little laugh.

“Well, it would have been so much easier had I been a fucking mafia leader or something,” he comments, and the thought of him being in charge, commanding, leading, God fearing… oh damn.

“Oof,” I say on an exhale, and he turns to me with a devilish look in his eyes and a smirk starting to pull at the corner of his lips.

“You like that idea?” he asks, to which I bite my bottom lip and simply say, “Fuck yeah.”

“Hmmm,” he mumbles as he leans across and brushes his lips over mine. “Well then, I guess I better get you back home and show you exactly who is in charge here.”

And with a girly giggle leaving my lips, he’s quickly putting his foot down and getting us back to the house. And let’s just say, he did indeed show me who was in charge and own every single part of me, just like I knew he would.

ChapterThirty-Nine

“We’ve not had any leads, I’m afraid. We’ve traced the messages, but we’ve eradicated the two names from your list who may have been responsible for this,” the officer says as he sits across from both Caleb and me as we stare stunned at him.

“But that’s impossible,” Caleb says. “It has to be one of them.”

“I assure you, sir, it isn’t.”

“Well then check again, you must have missed something,” Caleb continues, and I can feel the tension coming off of him in waves.

“We’ve already checked, sir.”

“That’s why I said check again,” Caleb grits out. Oh boy.

“I realise this must be frustrating for you—”

“Do you? Do you really?” Caleb interrupts, and once again, I’m placing my hand on his arm to remind him to cool it.

“If we find out anything else, we’ll be sure to let you know, but for now, there isn’t much else we can do,” the officer says as he places the phone which received the offending messages on the table in front of us—my phone. “I suggest that you have a good think about anyone else who could have been responsible and then let us know, but for now, just be aware, and anything that seems suspicious needs reporting to us as soon as possible.”

“Thank you,” I say quietly, because this officer has made up his mind and I fail to see what getting irate about it will do.

“I’ll see myself out, but you have my number. If any more messages come through, let me know and we’ll go back to the drawing board.”

And with that, the officer stands and then makes his way out of the kitchen, and we sit in silence until we hear the front door shut.

“I don’t fucking believe this,” Caleb fumes as he stands and starts to pace the kitchen. “How can it not be one of them? It just doesn’t make any sense.”

I don’t speak as I go to him and wrap my arms around his waist, making him stop his pacing. “I know, but there’s nothing we can do about it,” I whisper, needing him to just hold me and tell me that everything will be okay.

His arms hold me to him, a little tighter than they normally would, and I allow myself to just take comfort from his embrace.

And then, like a goddamn bomb has just gone off, my phone vibrates on the table as it sits there in the clear bag the police kept it in and acts like an omen.

We both just stare at it, and then Caleb drops his arms from around me and goes over and picks it up.

His face pales before his cheeks start to go red with anger.

With a sigh, I ask, “What does it say?”

I can see that he really doesn’t want to bother me with the message, but he turns the phone around anyway and I gasp as I read what it says.

Unknown number:

Nice try. Better luck next time.
