“No doubt,” he replied. “But, I’m going to leave you here and head back to my car. I need to head home, but I hope you had an amazing night. I know I sure as hell did.”

“I did, too,” I said. “In fact, I’m going to have to be the one to treat you to dinner coming up here, soon.”

“I would love that,” he replied. “I’m not going to invite myself over, but I can tell you I’m free most nights. Let me know what your schedule is, and we’ll have your people call my people and work something out.”

I scoffed.

“When the day comes that I’m rich enough to have my own people to call, I’m not ever going to do a thing for myself. I’ll just have my people bet on it and take care of it for me.”

He laughed. “That’s the spirit.”

He headed back to his car, and I headed into the house, taking my time to just breathe when I got inside. I couldn’t believe the way this man made me feel on top of the world. It was like it all came so naturally to him; he didn’t have to really try with anything.

We fit together like we were made to be together, and I felt myself falling in love with that, too.

I didn’t know what to expect with all these new feelings running through me, but I did know I was enjoying each and every second of it. I looked forward to getting out of bed in the morning, and I didn’t want that to go away.

And I had a feeling with what was coming together with Trevor, I might never again have to feel it going away.

This could be the beginning of the rest of my life.

And if that was the case, I was okay with it.

THIRTEEN

Trevor

I was just aboutto go to lunch when I decided to call Harper. I didn’t have a lot to talk about specifically, but I wanted to hear her voice. I just didn’t have anything ready when she asked why I was calling.

“Oh, no reason. I mean, I wanted to talk to you, obviously, but mostly I was just calling to see how your day is going so far.” I stammered over the words as I spoke them, and I could hear by the change in her tone that she was glad I’d called.

“It’s been a day,” she said. “Some days are harder than others when you’re just tired and ready to go home, but you have to be extra hands on with how things are going with the kids.”

“I can imagine,” I replied. “But if there’s anyone who can get through the day without too much trouble, it’s you. I’m sure you work well with all your kids.”

“I love them. But I also love being able to think without my mind feeling like it’s got almost thirty small voices breaking in all day,” she said.

“I’m sorry,” I tried to show my compassion. “Let me bring you coffee or something. I don’t have a lot going on this afternoon, and it would give me something to do on my lunch.”

“Why don’t you eat lunch on your lunch, you dork,” she suggested.

“I already ate,” I replied. “I don’t eat big lunches. I know how important it is to take care of yourself, so I try my best.”

“Ice latte?” she asked. “I don’t know if you can get away with bringing me a pumpkin spice, but I would love you forever if you did bring me one.”

“I’ll hold you to that if you’re not careful,” I warned.

She giggled, and there was a big part of me that wished she would say something about what I’d said. Even if she was teasing me, I liked to hear her say things about being with me. Or that we would be good together. Or that we were meant to be together.

We weren’t officially dating yet, but the way things were going, I felt that it wasn’t going to take much time before the two of us would be official. And when that happened, I didn’t want to ever think about what would happen if it came to an end. I could see myself with Harper, and that’s what I wanted to focus on.

“Make sure you come in with something for you, too, so you don’t look creepy just standing in here for a few minutes,” she said.

“You don’t think I’m going to look creepy anyway, coming in off the street in the middle of the day on a Monday to just come in to a room full of small children? I’m pretty sure if you put that in the headlines, it would sound like something coming out of the tabloids.”

She laughed out loud this time.

“Fair, you have a point with that. Alright, how about this? I’ll meet you around the back of the school so you don’t have to come in at all. It might be easier to keep you out of running into the principle anyway. Not that you would be doing anything wrong, but they really don’t like having any adults here when they don’t know who the person is,” she said.
