“Two.” Jax pushed the door wider and led them both outside. They made it down four of the precinct’s concrete steps before Declan hollered down at them from the doorway.

“Maggie found a tattoo on Wheatley’s back!”

Jax brought them to a stop and faced his brother. “You gonna give us more, or are we supposed to play twenty fucking questions about some dead guy’s ink?”

“Oh, there’s more.” Both Declan and Grady joined them once again. “But you’re going to have to wait for Noah to fill you in.”

“Noah?” Poppy’s gaze bounced between the three men. “Who’s—”

“Noah Killion,” Jax grumbled. “He’s local FBI.”

“And Maggie’s husband,” Grady added.

The pretty M.E. was married to an FBI agent?

Bet that makes for some interesting dinner conversation.

“Come on.” Declan walked past them down the rest of the steps. With his partner in tow, he added, “You guys can follow us there.”

“Why are we here?”Jax demanded.

He knew he sounded like an asshole, but he didn’t care. Between the lack of sleep and his frustration at Declan for having arranged that little impromptu therapy session without so much as a heads-up and having to stand by and watch as Poppy put herself back in that fucking alley, this day had gone straight to hell.

And it wasn’t even noon.

“Jax.” F.B.I. Special Agent Noah Killion greeted him as he and Poppy followed Declan and Grady into the private conference room. “Always a pleasure.”

A sharpfuck youwas on the tip of his tongue, but as he opened his mouth to spew the words at the cocky SOB, Jax caught Poppy watching him from the corner of his eye. For her sake, and her sake only, he bit back the words he wanted to say and greeted Noah’s partner, instead.

“Crenshaw.” He dipped his chin to Special Agent Wade Crenshaw. “That baby pop out yet, or what?”

“Any day now.” Wade beamed.

Figuring he should probably make introductions, Jax pointed first to Noah and then to Wade. “Poppy Campbell, meet Super Special Agent Noah Killion and his trusty side-kick, Special Agent Wade Crenshaw.”

“Nice to meet you.” Noah shook Poppy’s hand.

Wade followed suit.

Seconds later, Maggie rushed in. “Hey, guys. Sorry I’m late.”

All eyes turned to the sweet M.E. as she went straight to Noah and gave him a quick peck on the lips. “Hey.”

“Thanks for coming.”

“Of course.” Maggie walked over to Poppy. “Hey, there. How are you doing today?”

“Better than the last time you saw me,” Poppy chuckled.

Maggie grinned. “I bet.”

Motioning toward the long oval table, Noah told them all, “If everyone will have a seat, we’ll get through this as quickly as possible.”

Thank fuck.

Still standing at the front of the room, the formidable man—a guy Jax had actually grown to…dare he say it…like—handed his wife a small remote. “It’s cued and ready to go.”
