And he couldn’t even seem to getthatright.

See? This right here is a shining example of why you have no business even trying to have anything beyond a physical relationship with a woman.

Once again, that voice of reason was spot on. Guys like Jax should just stick to what they’re good at…

Taking down the bad guys and fucking. And not necessarily in that order.

His phone began to ring, the blaring sound a welcome distraction from his all-too-familiar thoughts.

Grabbing it from the edge of the bar, Jax glanced at the screen before answering. “What?”

“Good morning to you, too.”

Declan’s cheery voice grated on his last nerve. “I’m busy.”

“With?”

“I’m making breakfast.”Destroying it, more like.

His brother chuckled. “Since when do you cook?”

“Since today.” Jax grumbled.

Declan waited a beat to say, “These newly-discovered culinary skills of yours…they wouldn’t happen to have anything to do with the adorable woman who slept at your place last night, would they?”

She has everything to do with it.

“You know, I get that the English language can sometimes be difficult to understand so let me dumb it down for you. When a person tells you they’re busy, you should take it as a sign that they either A, don’t have time to sit on the phone and chit chat, or B, they don’t want to fucking talk to your ass. For me, in this particular case, both of those fit the situation. So I’ll say it again, slowly this time to avoid any confusion.” Jax made it a point to draw out every individual syllable as he repeated the words, “I’m. Bus-y.”

A stretch of silence consumed the next few seconds. And then…

“You know, with that winning personality of yours, it’s confounding that you’re still single.”

“Hanging up now—”

“Wait!” Declan’s deep sigh filled the phone’s speakers. “This isn’t a social call.”

Jax’s thumb froze over the screen, a fraction of a second from ending the call. “Then maybe next time you should lead with that.”

“Whatever, listen. How soon can you and Poppy get to the station?”

“Why?”

“I think we may have found a way for her to unlock more of her memory from Thursday night.”

Okay, nowthatgot his attention. “How?”

“I’ll give you all the details when you get here, but it needs to be soon.”

Jax wanted to press for more, but he knew enough about how his brother worked to even bother trying. With a quick glance down the hallway to his bedroom door, he told Declan, “I’ll make sure she’s up, and we’ll be on our way.”

“See you soon.”

Ending the call, Jax pulled in enough air to fill his lungs before blowing it out slowly. Things between them were bound to be awkward this morning, but it wasn’t like he could avoid her forever.

Abandoning all thoughts of breakfast, Jax put aside his apprehension at the thought of facing her again and headed down the hall. Despite their usual banner, his brother wouldn’t have called to request their presence if it wasn’t important.

And right now, nothing was more important to Jax than doing whatever necessary to make sure Poppy was safe. Sorting through their personal shit would simply have to wait.
