“Then, it’s settled. Neither of us is going to worry that much until we’re capable of doing something about it.” She raised her eyebrows. “Deal?”
I squinted playfully at her. “Deal.”
“You don’t believe that’s a good idea, do you?”
“I don’t believe you’renotgoing to worry.”
She rolled her eyes. “Shut up, Adam.”
“Make me.”
“I don’t think I have the strength.”
My playful grin turned mischievous. “It’s really simple. I can tell you how to do it without spending that much energy.”
“Yeah? There’s a trick to it, eh?”
“Yep. All you have to do is ask.”
Her features relaxed as she draped her arms over my shoulders. “Alright, tell me. What is it?”
“You see, all you have to do to shut me up is…” I traced her bottom lip lightly, watching goosebumps spring up on her neck as I whispered, “All you have to do iskiss me...”
Chapter 10 - Charlotte
My concern went right out the window when Adam grazed my lips with his finger. Just one touch from him solicited my response. It was out of my control at this point, a primal urge that laced through my system like a predator slithering through tall grass.
Would there be a day when I was free of his influence?
And why would I everwantthat?
A shudder and a sigh later, he had me on my back with his fingers drifting over my hospital gown. He located my exposed arm, stroked my flesh, and teased me.
“So receptive,” he whispered. “I don’t even have to touch you, do I?”
I whimpered when he pulled his hand away. “Don’t stop…”
“You want me to keep going?”
“Yes, sir,” I gasped breathlessly. “I always want you…” I raked my lower lip through my teeth before finishing, “...to keep going.”
His resounding chuckle thickened the air, tickling my senses. I could feel the curious amusement rising in him as if it was happening inside me. What else did we share? Could he feel my quickening heartbeat, my growing desire?
I mewled. Why else would he tease me like this?
My eyes rolled back when his fingers skated over my flesh. Though my lips barely moved, the sound of his name surfaced easily, “Adam?”
“Yes, cherry?”
“Do you believe in fated mates?”
His fingers halted at my wrist. “I don’t know. I guess so.” His throat clicked as he swallowed. “Do you?”
“I don’t know either.”
“Why are you asking?”
I blinked up at him, my vision clearing up enough to behold his features. All the wonder once seated in his expression was replaced by a concentrated frown. Though I could feel his emotions before, my chest burned with an achy void now. He was putting up his walls again.
