“Tell what?” Cal asked.
“That Mac’s smiling?”
“It’s obvious. He’s less growly, and his lips are all twitchy.”
Audrey and Cal both stared at Mac as if he were on display.
It was time for Maggie to go, just to avoid the awkward stare down. Eventually Audrey would turn it on her, and what was she supposed to say?Sorry I just got over my misinterpreted feelings for your brother and jumped into bed with your boyfriend’s brother? Was there a term for women who went after brothers? A fratophile? Was that a thing?
“Well,” she said brightly, “thank you for everything, Mac. I’ll see you soon.”
Mac flinched, dropping his eyes to the floor.
“You better text me back,” Audrey yelled as Maggie hightailed it to the front door and down the driveway to her car.

The words flowed out of Maggie’s fingertips almost faster than she could type them. She supposed it helped that she was exploding with feelings. Maggie could see the sparks igniting between Jenna and Luke on the page. When he pulled Jenna in for a kiss, Maggie could feel the touch of Mac’s hands on her back and his lips against hers. Her heart pounded right along with her characters as she rewrote the first time their eyes met. She was excited about her fictional world and fictional people again. Mac had given her a gift even better than orgasms, and he’d given her those, too.
Her skin flushed, remembering Mac’s eyes boring into her as if she were the most fascinating woman on the planet. Had they moved quickly? Yes. Did she regret it? No. She regretted not staying and seeing where the rest of the night would have taken them. Her phone buzzed on her desk, drawing her attention away from daydreams and memories hot enough to scald her internal organs.
Audrey:
Text me everything, bitch!
Audrey:
Right now.
Audrey:
Did you ride him during the entire Avengers movie? Because Ted, Ryan, and Josh didn't leave until the end and you stayed upstairs the whole time.
Audrey:
He looked much happier than he normally does.
Audrey:
Hello? Hello?!?!?!?
Maggie:
I'm not talking about this.
Not tonight.
Audrey:
Fine. We'll ask Mac.
Maggie:
Fine. Go for it.
Maggie didn’t wait for a response from Audrey. She doubted they’d actually pester Mac into sharing the details, but even if they did, Mac was a trustworthy guy. Her friends cared about them both. Nothing was going to dampen her good spirits tonight. She was too happy with how the night turned out. Too relaxed. Too satisfied.
“It was a good night,” Maggie said to her Jane Austen duck, running her fingertips over the plastic wing and tiny book. She couldn’t wipe the smile off her face, and she didn’t particularly want to. With her nerve-endings buzzing, Maggie couldn’t resist sending a quick message to Mac. She’d been texting him most evenings.
