I smirked and said, “Luke and I will close our eyes and turn around, not that we both haven’t seen it all already.” Luke glared at me and used the little strength he had to roll over and close his eyes. I did the same and I could feel the movement of air behind me as she shifted into her human form.
“Shit, it’s cold!” she gasped behind me.
“We’ve definitely noticed.” I chuckled. “I’m dying to know how you got here.”
“When I heard you guys were missing, I got worried, and I got an idea. Since I know two people who are mated can sense the general direction where the other is at all times, I found Lucy and asked her to point me in the direction of Luke. She wanted to come too but I didn’t let her, because of, well, you know, her condition. Anyway, I shifted into my wolf form and ran in that direction until I picked up your scents, which wasn’t too difficult since your blood had fallen on the ground. I noticed another wolf was doing the same thing, so I stayed quiet and followed behind him, making sure he didn’t notice me. After he entered the cave, I figured that’s where you must be, so I ran. And then when Blake yelled for him to stop, I figured out what he was trying to do and I did the same thing. I wasn’t sure if it would work, but I thought it might, and it did!”
“Hot damn, Miss Alpha!” I shouted, smiling at how amazing she was.
I felt the air move as she shifted again. I turned back around to see her in her wolf form. Her eyes darted upwards, and I could tell she was mindlinking someone. She sat and looked down at me. I looked up at her and burst into laughter. Both she and Luke looked at me, furrowing their brows in confusion.
I laughed harder, clutching my stomach at the pain it was causing and exclaimed, “Jasmine, you’re so confused! Our date was supposed to be yesterday at six at your house, not today, at whatever time it is, in a fucking cave!”
Chapter 63
Blake
Iwokeupina hospital bed, not knowing what day or time it was, with an IV in my arm. I could feel that my ribs were still healing, but the burning from the wolfsbane had finally subsided. After some time, Dr. Davis came in. He was the other doctor who worked at the clinic with my mom.
“Ah, Alpha, you’re awake. How are you feeling?”
“Better,” I replied, looking at him.
“Glad to hear it. We took some of your blood and you had at least five times the lethal amount of wolfsbane in your bloodstream. That was likely after you had already metabolized some already. To be quite honest, I am baffled that you’re still alive.”
“High tolerance.” I smirked.
“Glad to see that we still have our alpha with us. Other than that, it seems you just need time to heal at this point.”
Upon hearing what he said, a sickness came over me. “Where’s my mom?” I asked.
He looked at me sadly. “Due to the circumstances, she’s taking a leave of absence until she’s ready to return to work. She’s been in to visit you while you were sleeping, and I’m sure she’ll be in again. I’m very sorry for your loss, Alpha.”
I nodded at him, and fell back into my pillow, finding myself spiraling into my thoughts. I wished I could shift into my wolf so I could get rid of them, feeling trapped in my human body. Before the doctor left, I asked, “How’s my beta?”
“He’s almost fully recovered, Alpha.”
“Good, thank you,” I replied. After he left the room, I looked around to see that it was filled with flowers and cards. I found a remote and turned on the TV, hoping to find a distraction.
After some time, a nurse came in and said, “There’s a visitor here to see you. Can I send her in Alpha?”
“Yes,” I replied, hoping it was who I thought it was. I smiled as a familiar face walked through the door, my heart skipping a beat as she came closer and I inhaled her comforting scent.
“Hi, Blake,” Jasmine greeted me, a shy smile on her face.
“Miss Alpha, my hero and the reason I’m still alive!” I smiled at her, desiring to grab her, pull her against me, and feel her body against mine.
She blushed and sat down on the chair next to my bed. “How are you feeling?”
“Like shit, but you know, it comes with the job. So, when are you joining the team?”
“You’re a terrible salesperson.” She laughed.
“I don’t need to be good at sales. I can just force everyone to do whatever I want. And, apparently, you can too. I learn something new about you every time.”
Jasmine looked at me sadly. “I heard about your dad.” I turned away from her, looking up at the ceiling, and nodded my head. I could feel myself withdrawing. When I didn’t say anything, she put her hand on mine and asked, “Are you okay?”
I glanced back at her and sighed. “Yeah.” I didn’t know what else there was to say. We stayed like that for a while, not speaking.
