“Told you,” Canon says smiling. God his smile is perfect.
“That’s exactly how my brother Mason reacted when I snuck him some for his 16th birthday,” he starts laughing, “I got so much shit for that because he started freaking out.”
I look at him bewildered because I guess I never thought about him having other family members. After he told me his mom passed away, I never really thought about that part.
“Foster, but blood couldn’t make us closer.” He adds since I know this weed isn’t allowing me to hide my confusion. “The only family I have…or had, is my lil bro Mason and a guy named Ian I can’t get rid of.”
I’m surprised he’s volunteering so much information seeing as he’s been kind of tight-lipped about his life. Maybe it’s the drugs talking.
“Remind me to ask more about Ian when I’m sober. How old is Mason?”
“Just turned 19 and is already accomplishing much more than I did at his age. He goes to Morehouse in Atlanta.” Pride explodes in his eyes as he says this.
“Wow. I can tell he means a lot to you.” I smile sincerely.
“Yea.” Silence surrounds us and we listen to the sound of the waves crashing against the shore for a while before Canon speaks again. “I noticed you keep a lot of pictures everywhere.”
“Yeaaa, capturing memories is kind of my thing.”
He laughs before saying, “we couldn’t be more opposite. I hate taking pictures. No point in remembering this shit life.”
I purse my lips, choosing to pocket that statement for now and decide to pull out my phone. I open the camera app and then raise it up, trying to get us both in frame.
“Uh, what are you doing?” Canon asks.
“Helping you start to see the beauty in the cards you were dealt,” I answer honestly, turning to look at him. “We can’t control how we got here but we can sure as hell control where we’re going.”
I raise the phone up again, angling the phone to fit him when he leans in and smiles. I take a couple pictures for good measure before lowering the phone and turning to speak.
“See, that wasn’t so —“ I can’t finish my sentence because we’re a breath apart and his eyes lock me into place.
I don’t know if it’s the blunt or what, but my body suddenly comes alive. I slam my mouth into his so hard, I’m surprised I don’t shatter our teeth in the process.
He moves instantly, using both hands to cup my jaw so he can take control. We make out for what feels like hours, our tongues fighting aggressively with one another, when I decide I need more.
I break the kiss to push my hands into his chest, motioning for him to lay in the sand. As he does this, I straddle him and resume my assault on his mouth.
I suck and pull on his lower lip, a move I never dared to initiate with my ex, but Canon just brings a different side out of me. His hands grab my ass, squeezing and pushing me down so that I’m grinding on him.
I start moaning into his lips when I feel my phone vibrating in my pocket. I ignore it at first, but then it starts vibrating again.
Canon starts sitting up, but I stay straddling him.
We finally stop kissing and I pull my phone out of my pocket, the name slamming me back into reality.
“Amy,” is all I say to Canon before hurrying off him.
“Hey Ame,” I answer, clearing my throat so it sounds less…excited?
“Where are you? It’s late and not like you to be off adventuring by yourself.” She sounds concerned.
“Oh, um, Canon saw I was bored so he offered to take me to the beach. We’re on the way back now.” I glance at him, but his face gives nothing away.
“Whaaaaatt! Now I’m jealous. I want to go to the beach. We should all go tomorrow.”
“All including Connor?” I ask, chuckling.
“Of course not. Hurry home, okay?”
