I was about to kiss him when my brother cleared his throat. “I’m sitting right here.”

“Playing with blocks, I might add,” I said with a chuckle.

He tilted his head. “Don’t knock it until you try it.”

I gazed at Jenner. “What do you think? Should we go have play-time with our little family?”

Something flashed in his eyes. I couldn’t tell what he was thinking, but he nodded.

“The best family in the world,” he said before he leaned in and kissed me on my lips.

Chapter 23

Lola

“How bad is it?” I winced and crossed every finger I had.

“Truth?” Lydia stood there in a pretty floral-print dress, drawing out my torment.

“Yes, obviously.”

“He’s superb at it. The guests are loving everything.”

I had gone with my brother’s idea of opening a bed-and-breakfast—a very swanky bed-and-breakfast.

Today was the official opening day, and our first guests were arriving. I put my brother in charge of event organization since he had great ideas, but I worried that, once the day came, things would go wrong.

It had been two months since Jenner and I finally accepted our past and confessed our love. He moved into the Hudson Estate with Jenni and me, and we all worked hard to fix the place up. It was like living in a fabulous dream, spending every day with the people I loved most in a beautiful setting.

But today was the test. Would that dream die or become even greater?

I lowered my hand from my chest. “So, you’re saying all is good?”

Lydia smiled. “Yes. You can stop thinking the worst. Just enjoy all you have done.” She waved her arm around the room.

“Well, it wasn’t just me. Jenner took care of all the legal planning and permits, and you did an amazing job with the landscaping.”

She bowed. “Thank you, my lady.”

The door to the estate office flew open, and Jenner stood there with a look of terror in his eyes. “Don’t freak out,” he said in between gulps of air.

“When you say that, then I have to start freaking out.” My heart started pounding in my ears.

Jenner straightened, smoothing out his tie. “You’re right. I should have calmly come in here. Nice, relaxed strides like this.” He slowly made his way to my desk. “Before I told you that, I found out one of our guests was the devil.”

Both Lydia and I looked at each other before we laughed.

“How would you even know the guest was the devil if you just met the person?” But the hairs on the back of my neck rose as his words sank in.

“Jocelyn... She’s booked a room for the week.” Jenner leaned his hands on the desk.

I stood there, unable to move. Though the outside of my body froze, the inside was working like mad. My stomach churned as my heart began pumping so hard, I thought it might pop out of my chest.

“I know what to do.” Lydia smirked. “I can give her a private tour of the woods. If she accidentally falls into a deep ditch, then she’s not a problem anymore.”

I narrowed my eyes at my friend. “Did you ever work for the mob?”

“No. But I love mobster movies.”
