“I love—”

The door flew open, cutting me off.

There stood Jocelyn.

“Shit,” Jenner mumbled.

“What is going on here? Is there going to be a celebration? I saw all the flowers...”

Eric went over to Jocelyn and pulled her into his arms. I shuddered in revulsion. I didn’t think I’d ever get used to them being together.

“We are going to have a wedding here,” Eric announced.

“A wedding?” The evilest grin I ever saw burst forth on her face. “Does that mean you’re proposing, Eric?”

“Uh, what?” Eric frowned. “It’s for my sister and your brother... They’re engaged.”

Jocelyn’s nostrils flared, and her gaze slid to me. “Really? I didn’t think my brother was the marrying type,” her murderous focus slid to Jenner, “especially not to someone like a Hudson.”

Jenner stiffened in my arms. “Jocelyn, let’s move on. Please.”

She stepped further into the room as if my brother wasn’t touching her. “Move on? I’m always moving forward, big brother. Always.” She came over to me and said, “Let me see it.”

“What?”

She rolled her eyes. “The ring.”

I held up my hand.

Her frown turned into something darker—I had never seen someone with so much hatred in their eyes. “That’s Mom’s ring...”

“Jocelyn, please. She willed it to me, so—”

“So what?” Jocelyn turned to face her brother with barely an inch between them. “Was this your plan all along? I mean, it was your plan to be their lawyer all along, so once you became that, the next logical step was what? To marry the idiot sister?”

Jenner’s eyes grew, and he coughed.

Eric came up from behind. “Don’t say that about my sister.”

“I’ll say whatever I want about Lola; that’s why we’re here. Don’t you know the only reason Jenner is your friend is to destroy you?”

“No! That’s not true!” Jenner shook his head. “Jocelyn, shut up.”

“What is she talking about, Jenner?” I asked, because nothing was making sense.

It was one thing to be angry I was wearing her mom’s ring, but the talk about destroying my brother... Well, that was strange.

Jocelyn stepped away from Jenner and let out a loud sigh. “I guess I can tell you all the truth now. I mean, your money is my money, so where’s the harm in opening that decade-old chest that held our family secret?”

Jenner pulled away and ran over to her. “Don’t. Joce, please.” He glanced back at me for a moment before pleading once again at his sister. “I love her.”

“Then you’re too stupid to be next to me. Go stand by your lady love and watch as I make them cry.”

“She’s just angry about the ring...” Jenner whispered as he came over to me. “Let’s leave.”

I glanced over at Jocelyn and wondered if she was really crazy, just telling angry lies to hurt us? Or was she trying to hurt us for a reason?

The way Jenner was reacting, I suspected the latter to be true.
