Lola clasped her chest and leaned against a tree. “I don’t think I’m hungry anymore.”

It was dark and cold, and we had left our coats inside the restaurant with the coat check. I shrugged off my suit jacket and handed it over to Lola, who shook her head to refuse.

“No you don’t.” I shook the jacket at her. “It’s below freezing right now, and you’re in a sleeveless dress.”

She pursed her lips and finally grabbed the jacket. Lola threw it on and clutched it together at her chest, clearly colder than she had let on.

“My brother is an idiot...”

My eyes widened. “What did you call him?”

She groaned. “An idiot. No, I take that back. He’s a spoiled little man-child who makes lots of stupid decisions and then blames other people for those decisions.” She let out a deep breath as if she had been holding it in all her life. “Wow... That felt really good to say out loud.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever heard you say a bad word about your brother before. You had called him your hero.”

What else had she been keeping from me? I shook my head. No, that was the past. A person could keep things to themselves. How she felt about her brother wasn’t about me.

“He is a man-child, isn’t he?” I chuckled.

She shook her head and waved me over, and I pulled her into my embrace to help keep her warm. Lola was the one, I knew it. Deep in my bones, I felt like we were always meant to be together.

“I missed him so much, and now that he’s back in my life, I sometimes wonder if I should have run even farther.”

But then I never would have seen her again, or met my daughter. I was about to say that when her hand slid down the front of my stomach and in between my legs.

“Have you ever wanted to have sex in the woods?” She wiggled her brows.

She didn’t have to say anything else. My hand slid down to grab her ass cheek, and my fingers curled. I wanted to devour her with the trees as our shelter.

There was something primal about pressing her back against the tree. Lola’s back arched as I lifted the hem of her dress and slid my finger across her damp panties.

“Do you want me to stop?” I whispered into her ear.

She shivered. “No.”

Her icy fingers pulled up the hem of my shirt and slid under. Her nails scratched up to my chest.

I slid my fingers deep inside her wet pussy and toyed with her. Her head fell back against the rough tree bark. Even with just the moonlight painting her face, I could see the want in her eyes.

“Don’t stop.” She dug her nails in harder.

She was about to come, and I watched as she unraveled before me, calling my name into the darkness.

I kept her steady as I unzipped my pants and slid them down. Lifting her leg, she wrapped it around me, and I slipped inside her as if our bodies were always meant to be this way.

I cupped her cheek and stared into her eyes. “Lola—”

I wanted to say more, but I lost the words because the moment caught me off guard. My feelings for her were stuck in my throat as I slid in and out of her.

She smiled and sighed as if she knew. Maybe I didn’t have to tell her. All I had to do was show her how much I loved her. How much I’d always loved her.

And when I kissed her, we came together. That was it... my signal from the world that we were always meant for each other.

Chapter 18

Lola

I nibbled at my lower lip. “Do they still have debtors’ prison?”
