“Won’t be necessary. I’m almost done.” I’d be damned if I owed anyone else. I was going to pay this shit off and never look back.
“See, that’s what I like about you.” Some commotion came over the phone. I prayed to anyone who’d listen that Wakeman got pulled away, and I wouldn’t have to talk to him anymore.
“When you come, we have many things to talk about. I have a business proposition I just know you’ll love.”
I doubted that. If it had anything to do with him, I’d rather stand in the middle of a burning building. Before I could say anything, the line went dead.
“Hey, Keegan.” A hand dropped on my shoulder.
I reacted before anything registered in my brain. I snatched the wrist and twisted it, ready to break it. The fork in my hand hovered over the guy’s hand. I blinked a few times, and the guy from school came into view.
I released him instantly. He hissed as he held his wrist close, eyeing the fork in my hand.
“Don’t sneak up on me.”
“Sorry.” He rubbed his wrist, and for a moment, I felt bad. He shouldn’t have touched me. “I saw you were on a call and decided to wait. Next time I’ll make sure to get your full attention.”
I nodded, and he slid into the seat across from me. “Have you already ordered?”
Just as he asked, Martha came out with a full tray of food. The sight of all the food made my stomach growl, and my appetite was back in full swing.
“Wow, that’s a lot of food,” he said. Martha and I both looked at him. “Good thing I’m here. I can help you.”
“Touch my food, and I won’t hesitate to stab that fork through your hand.” The guy lifted his hand, and a strained laugh stumbled free. “Got it. Won’t happen. Can I place an order?”
“Need a menu?”
The guy nodded. I focused on him, trying to recall his name. It was something basic, but it wasn’t coming to me. I picked up the burger and took a bite. I groaned as the flavors sparked along my tongue. There was nothing like good food.
“Most girls avoid getting that burger. It has so much stuff on it.”
Right, he’s annoying.I’d nearly forgotten. Everything about him was so boring that he was easily forgettable.
I swallowed my bite. “I’m not most girls.”
He leaned forward, getting too close to my food. I glared at him. He backed up, and I continued to eat.
“I know. That’s why I like you.”
Hearing that was like having a wet blanket tossed over me. When Hawke said it, my entire body lit up, and my stomach flipped like I was on a rollercoaster.
“Uh, okay.” I had no other response and felt like it would be pointless.
He didn’t seem like the kind of guy that actually listened when someone, especially someone with boobs, said anything.
“The test results came back. They were announced this morning.”
I shrugged, wondering why he was bringing up school. It was the weekend. Didn’t these guys take a damn break?
“You didn’t do so well.”
I choked on the bite and grabbed my mug of coffee to wash it down. “Wait.” I swallowed a few more times. “We get to see each other’s results?”
He nodded. “All major test results are posted to the student forum. We are then ranked by grades, test scores, and any special criteria.”
This was the first I’d heard of it. Mac’s face flashed before me, and I groaned. If we were on speaking terms, he might have clued me in. I was still firmly ignoring him.
The guy pulled out his phone and leaned across the table. “It will be better if I show.”
