I could feel Hawke’s gaze on me the entire time. It felt like a caress, and my stupid body heated up.
“I don’t mind at all. In fact, stay bent over like that,” Rem said.
Her voice had that raspy effect to it, making my stomach twist. I grabbed my bag but forced myself to move slowly. The last thing these assholes needed was to see if what they said affected me in any way.
“You two have nothing better to do?” I asked.
Hawke smiled and how in the hell he pulled off hot and crazy all at once was beyond my understanding. There were so many alarm bells going off just looking at him, but instead of my body agreeing with my brain to run in the opposite direction, I was drawn closer to them like a moth to a flame.
“I can think of a few things,” Hawke said.
Rem shook her head before I could ask what. “You’re not ready for that, beautiful.”
“Right.” I turned away from them and locked the car as I headed toward the building.
The faster I got away from them, the better. The last thing I needed was to get drawn further into their bullshit. No such luck. An arm was draped over my shoulders, and I went stiff. I glanced at Rem from the corner of my eye.
She smiled at me, and fuck if it didn’t make me relax a little. Her short brown hair was pulled back in a half-up hair style. She had a defined jawline that models would cry for. Along with a pointed nose and eyes the color of honey. The corner of Rem’s mouth tilted up in a smirk, and I jerked my gaze forward. Shit, I was already slipping up.
Hawke walked right next to me, humming some unknown song. Looking lost in his own little world. For all I knew, he was daydreaming about scaring babies and hunting random fucking strangers in the woods.
As we walked into the school, one thing became abundantly clear: the whole king thing was very much real. Students moved out of our way instantly. I felt eyes on me with every step we took.
“Is there any reason I get this special treatment?” I was barely holding back my anger, but by the way Rem’s mouth tilted up in a smile, I hadn’t held back nearly enough.
“Of course, you’re the new girl,” Rem said.
I rolled my eyes and removed Rem’s arm from my shoulder. “So, it has nothing to do with the bullshit claim you put on me?”
“Know about that already?” Hawked asked.
He was even closer to me than I’d noticed. What the hell? I fought with myself not to jump back.
“You aren’t being subtle about it.” I stepped back a little being so close to them didn’t make me nearly as uncomfortable as I knew I should have been.
Rem shrugged. “More like someone told you. I want to know who.”
I wasn’t a snitch. There was no way in hell I would tell them Mac had given me any information on them. “Can’t say I recall.”
Rem’s brow lifted in question. “Is that so?” She moved fast, and I held my breath as she entered my personal space. “Want to bet I can find out who in the next ten minutes?”
“Great, so now what? Hazing?” I made sure to keep Hawke in my line of sight. My instincts screamed he was dangerous. “Another stupid fucking hunt?”
Hawke laughed, his wild gaze pinning me in place. “You’d like that, wouldn’t you, Corpse?”
I grimaced. “Not my name.”
“It is as of today,” a rich voice that plagued my fucking nightmares said behind me.
Fuck my everlasting life. How in the hell did this shit keep happening to me? A heavy sigh left me as I turned on my heels, and I was faced with Luxious Rodell, aka the king of fucking kings. My day was getting better by the second.
“Wow, three kings. What do I owe this fucking honor?” I glanced at Rem. “Queen?” Although she screamed king with every drop of masculine energy oozing out of her.
“Not a chance, beautiful.” Rem winked at me as she leaned against the lockers.
I nodded. “Whatever. How long is this shit going to take?” I held up my phone. “Class is starting soon.”
Luxious’s eyes darkened as he stared at me. If I weren’t me, I’d be quaking in my fucking heels. In order for that to happen he’d have to do much worse than glare at me.
