“A report on Ali’s boss.”

Instead of questioning why he would have such a thing, Bradley began combing through the papers. “What am I looking for?”

“I don’t know.” What he wanted to find was something he could use to get the man fired. Or better yet, arrested. He was making Ali’s life miserable, and it was going to end one way or another.

CHAPTER24

Daniel focusedon the road while his son flipped through the first few pages. “His full name is Grant Edward Jacobson. He’s forty-eight. Grew up outside of Chicago.”

Bradley flipped through a few more pages. “Good grades. Got detention for skipping class his senior year.”

“What about after he graduated?” Daniel asked.

“Let’s see.” Bradley read several more pages before continuing. “Got a job in management straight out of college. Looks like there was some family connection to the company. Three years later, he moved to Columbus Ohio and took a job in hospital administration.”

“How long was he there?”

“Four years.”

Daniel merged onto the highway. Luckily, the bulk of the traffic had dissipated. The majority of what was left was headed out of the city, not into it. “Does it say why he left?”

“No, but I’m assuming it had something to do with the pay of his new job.”

“Where was that?”

“St. Louis.”

Bradley read Daniel the rest of Grant Jacobson’s work history, but nothing was ringing any bells. “What about where he lived? His hobbies?”

“Dad, what is it about this guy? I haven’t seen you this upset since Cassie snuck out of the house her junior year to go to that concert.”

Daniel flexed his fingers against the steering wheel. “He took over Ali’s department about six months ago. She used to love her job. Now she hates it.”

“You’re this upset because your girlfriend hates her boss?”

Daniel snorted, wishing it were that simple. From what Ali had shared with him, her boss was a passive aggressive ass. “Two weeks ago, her boss informed her he needed her to go to a charity event in his place.”

“And she didn’t wanna go?”

“That wasn’t the problem.” Daniel looked over his shoulder before changing lanes. “He gave her a day and a half notice. Told her she had to bring a date.” He took the exit ramp, the hospital building in his sights. “I’d known things weren’t great with her boss before that, but then the night of the event she was nervous and told me she had to mingle so she’d have proof she was there.”

Silence filled the SUV as his son took in that piece of information. “That’s fucked up.”

Daniel didn’t comment.

As he turned into the parking lot of the hospital administration building, he searched for Ali’s car. He tried her cell once more, but it went to voicemail. Again. “Dammit.”

“Still no answer?”

“No.” He parked in one of the visitor’s spots and got out. “Stay here.”

Not waiting to see if Bradley agreed or not, he jogged to the sliding glass doors. They were locked, of course, but he was hoping he could find a security guard or something.

No such luck.

Blowing out a breath, he made his way down the walkway to the hospital’s main entrance. With every step he took, he became more irritated. Where the hell was she and why wasn’t she answering her phone?

The large glass doors at the hospital’s main entrance opened and he stepped inside. A security guard sat behind the large reception desk. He looked up as Daniel entered. “Evening.”
