“Follow Hana. I’m taking her tonight.”
* * *
I strode to my car, idling at the curb, and my driver pulled out into the heavy afternoon traffic.
“So, where’s she headed? If it’s the Song compound, we need to take her before,” I told Kira, who was sitting with her phone beside me.
“She’s not going home. She has another stop, it looks like.”
“Where?”
“Unclear. We’ll know soon enough. So, you’re going for it? The Songs and Lucianos aren’t going to like this one bit,” Kira pointed out.
“Really? And there I was thinking they’d welcome me into the fold as a brother-in-law,” I snapped back, my patience ragged under the weight of anxiety Hana’s news had settled on my shoulders.
“Who knows, maybe they’d had plans for Hana, like marrying Rocco. He’s the youngest, unattached Luciano. It would have tied things up nicely,” Kira remarked. “He needs a distraction. He’s getting himself into trouble.”
I turned to look at her. “What are you talking about?”
She smirked. “Nothing much. I’m bored and sneaking into the computer systems of your enemies is fun. Rocco Luciano is a naughty boy and I bet his brothers won’t like that when they find out.”
“I don’t care about the Lucianos or the Songs for that matter. I only care about Hana,” I bit out, cracking my tattooed knuckles and staring out at the busy street.
Kira looked at her phone. “They’ve stopped somewhere. A doctor’s office a few blocks over.”
Hana was sick? She’d never said anything.
“Well, let’s get there. It'll be easier to take her from there than anywhere else.”
“Yes, boss. I called some backup, hope you don’t mind,” Kira said.
“I don’t mind, as long as everyone knows that no one is to be harmed. Threatened? Sure, but no one is to be hurt. I’ll take care of Hana myself.”
“Sounds good.” Kira’s smile stretched across her face.
“We are about to do something that could be considered an act of war against two of the biggest families in this city. Why do you look so excited?”
“At least it isn’t boring… finally,” Kira teased.
CHAPTER10
Hana
After a quick chat, I got changed into the hospital gown the nurse provided.
“Is this really necessary?” I wondered, suddenly panicking that the doctor would be able to tell that I’d just had sex an hour before.
“Mrs. Song insisted on a full check-up. I’ll just take your samples for analysis, and the doctor will be with you in a moment,” the nurse reassured me, before leaving. I sighed, sinking onto the exam bed, and staring out the window. Where was Kon now? I still couldn’t believe he’d snuck into the library to see me. If only I wasn’t being sent across the other side of the world, maybe I’d have been able to see him, now and then, over the years, until he met someone he wanted to marry of course.
A knock sounded at the door. Ho Jin poked his head inside.
“Everything ok?”
“Yes, though Dami wants me to have every test available just because I’ve had an upset stomach for a few weeks,” I grumbled. All I wanted to do was go home and burrow into bed, so I could daydream over my surprisingly exciting afternoon.
“Well, a few weeks is a long time to get sick. She’s probably just worried that you’re pregnant,” Ho Jin smirked at me and then chuckled at my wry expression.
“Very funny. Some of us are very diligent with taking birth control, thank you very much.”
