His smile was gentle. “Something very rare, raqisat alqamar.Something very, very special that would be a crime to ignore.”

She nuzzled his hand when he caressed her cheek.

“You are dangerous,” she softly retorted.

A knock on the door warned them that they were no longer alone. She stepped back from Junayd as the door opened and Idella peered inside. Midnight's eyes went to the clothes and the bag that Idella was holding.

“Sorry to interrupt. I thought you might want your bag and some fresh clothes."

Midnight breathed a sigh of relief and nodded. “Yes, thank you. Thesearen’t in the best of shape at the moment.”

“How are you feeling?” Idella asked, her eyes lingering on her exposed face.

Midnight blushed.

“Like I’ve been shot… a couple of times,” she replied ruefully.

Idella gave her a knowing smile. “You’re welcome to stay here as long as you like. There is an apartment next door that you might find more comfortable. I’m not anticipating any more excitement, but you never know,” she said.

“I can’t stay,” Midnight protested.

Junayd grunted with displeasure, and she glanced at him from under her lashes.

“At least get cleaned up and stay for a few hours. We don't want you passing out on the street,” Idella cautioned.

Midnight glanced at Junayd again and nodded. “Okay.”

Music and the sound of voices filtered up from the lower levels. Idella pressed in a code and the door opened. The apartment next door to the recovery room was small but elegantly decorated. A kitchenette to the left had a dinette and four chairs. The living room contained a plush sofa, two matching chairs, a coffee table, and two end tables. Smoked-glass double doors led to the bedroom. Junayd could see a queen-size bed with matching nightstands, a dresser, and the doorway leading to an adjoining bathroom.

“Mike is in charge of the kitchen tonight. He knows what you like to eat if you want to call down. If you need anything else, please let me or one of my staff know,” Idella said.

“Thank you,” Midnight replied.

“Food and rest are just what Harry ordered,” Idella teased as she stepped out of the room.

Junayd took Midnight’s bag from her and hung it on the back of a kitchen chair. She looked indecisive. He tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear.

“Why don’t I order us something to eat while you get cleaned up? The bandages are waterproof. I can always change them if needed.”

She nodded. “I’ll take a mild buffalo chicken wrap with fries,” she murmured.

“One chicken wrap coming up,” he said.

He waited until she closed the bathroom door behind her before he placed the order with the kitchen. Afterward, he stood in the center of the room, fighting the urge to check on Midnight. She had lost a lot of blood, and anesthesia could have after-effects. The memory of how she had swayed when she stood sent him in motion.

He paused at the bathroom door. The sound of the shower warned him that she might not hear his knock. He checked the doorknob. It was unlocked.

“Midnight, are you alright?” he called.

“Yes, don’t come in,” she squeaked.

His lips quirked at the surprisingly cute sound she had just emitted. “I won’t. I wanted to make sure you were alright.”

"I'm fine," she called.

"Ok... good—I’m here if you need me."
