“Am I allowed to at least leave the cabin?”
“For what purpose?”
“Like, to go to the diner to see Rowan, or get lunch with Indy or something like that?”
“Baby, you’re not a prisoner. You can still do your thing. I just need you to be smart. You can do all your normal shit if Tango goes with you and Sundance says it’s safe.”
“Does it have to be Tango?”
“It can be Tango, Scooby, or an officer,” he said.
“Jekyll?”
“Why the fuck would you want to go anywhere with Jekyll?” he growled.
“No reason,” I said. “I’m just asking.”
He let out a frustrated sigh. “Tango, Scooby,Jekyll, or another officer,” he amended. “You good?”
“Yeah, I’m good.”
“I’m gonna hang up now.”
“Okay.”
“Love you, Moonbeam.”
I sighed. “Love you, too. Conditionally. On Tuesdays.”
“Good thing today’s Tuesday,” he said with a chuckle, then hung up.
Wrath
“All quiet,” Rabbitwhispered, pulling his headphones off.
He and I were currently in the back of one of the club vans, staking out his former foster parents’ house. Rabbit had tapped into the home’s internal security cameras and was currently watching the asshole tear his way through a six pack of Keystone.
“What else you see?” I asked.
“Looks like Marva’s getting ready to go out,” Rabbit said. “She’d usually split for the bar around this time every night.”
“How much did the bitch know about Cletus’s shit?”
“All of it.” Rabbit scowled. “They couldn’t have kids of their own, so they played a good game for the system. But she’s just as warped as he is. The number of times she tried to get me alone, or ‘accidentally’ walk in on me while I was showering was disgusting. She’d prey on the boys, he’d go for the girls. I was secure enough in myself that it didn’t rattle me, and since she’s a dumb shit, I could outsmart her. Until Jette disclosed, though, I hadn’t realized how bad it got with Cletus, or that they’d been doin’ it to the little ones.” He pressed a palm to his eye socket. “I shoulda fuckin’ known.”
“You were a kid, brother.”
“Yeah, but I coulda protected Jette better.”
“Brother, you did more than anyone else ever fuckin’ did,” I said. “And we’re finishin’ it now.”
Rabbit gave me a nod.
“You sure Marva’s headed out alone?”
“Yeah. Cletus is chilling in his recliner, drinking beer in his boxers. Sonofabitch looks like he doesn’t have a care in the world.”
I squeezed his shoulder. “Alright. As soon as the bitch leaves, I’ll give ol’ Cletus something to care about.”
