Kinsey crawled over to the edge. “Oh my god. Is that…”
Her voice trailed off, and I nodded. “Someone put them there on purpose,” I said grimly, staring at the sharp sticks. “They wanted you to fall on them.”
Her eyes bulged. “So someone tried to kill me?”
“Or maim you, at least,” I said. I crouched next to her and squeezed her arm. “Did you see who it was?”
She shook her head. “I thought it was you,” she muttered.
“So it was a guy?”
“I don’t know. All I could really see was a silhouette,” she said. “I mean, it was obviously a person, but that’s all I could tell. I just assumed it was you because of the texts.”
“I didn’t text you,” I said. “You were right earlier. Someone sneaked into the chalet and stole my phone when we were in the hot tub.”
Tears slid down Kinsey’s cheeks. “God, I’m so fucking stupid,” she said in a broken whisper, wiping her face with one hand. “I should’ve known you wouldn’t ask me to walk around in the middle of the night by myself. I mean, you literallytoldme that earlier. You said you’d never let me walk alone in the dark.”
“It’s not your fault,” I said softly, rubbing her back. “The texts came from my phone. You had no way of knowing it wasn’t me.”
She nodded slowly, but I could tell she was still mentally kicking herself. “What’s that?” she asked a moment later, raising a shaky finger in front of her.
I glanced over. A faint light was shining from behind one of the trees on the other side of the narrow ravine. “Stay here,” I said, heart thudding. “I’ll check it out.”
I carefully jumped over the ravine and slowly headed toward the tree. The light wasn’t moving, and it appeared to be at ground level. “I know you’re hiding behind there,” I called out. “Don’t even try to run.”
When I stepped around to the other side of the tree, my shoulders sagged. The light was coming from my phone screen, which was cracked and dirty. Whoever stole it must’ve dropped it here before they ran away.
I vaulted back over the ravine and returned to Kinsey’s side. Her chest was still heaving, and her face was streaked with frozen tears. “I can’t believe someone would do this,” she said. “Who the hell would want medead?”
“I don’t know.” I clenched my jaw and took her hand to help her up. “Come on. I’ll take you back to your cabin. We’ll have a hot shower to warm up, and then we’ll go to bed. Okay?”
Her eyes widened. “But—”
I silenced her protests with a finger over her lips. “I don’t give a fuck if everyone sees me,” I said in a low voice. “I’m not leaving you alone tonight. Got it?”
She nodded slowly, lips curving at the corners in a ghost of a smile. “Got it.”

Senior Trip Gossip Extravaganza Day 2
Cerina V was spotted sneaking out of her lake house at 1 in the morning. Where was she going? Secret hookup? We know it wasn’t her ex-FWB Jax K, because he was spotted in another lake house this morning after spending the night with Kinsey H. Get it, girl.
Tiana F and Aimee B were seen snorting something in the downstairs bathroom at last night’s party. I’m sure it was totally just icing sugar, right?
Brent K was overheard hooking up with a mystery girl at the party. Who was she? Or was he just watching loud porn and beating off up there? It’s Brent, so it could go either way…
Dan B was overheard at the bonfire saying he thinks his sister is hot. Can we all say EWW?
Sarah P and Max C cheated on their respective partners with each other while everyone else was at the party. Don’t deny it darlings – there’s pics.
