“You always fucking do this!” she shouted, finally speaking loudly enough to be fully audible. “God, just forget it!”

I inched farther forward so I could hear better. It was none of my business, but I was curious about the sudden drama.

“Come on,” Jax replied. “You know what this is. I’ve always been clear with you.”

“Yeah. Whatever.” There was a pause, and then the sound of a car door slamming shut. “I’m going home.”

“I’ll drive you there.”

The girl scoffed. “No thanks. I want to walk.”

I quietly stood up and went over to the far end of the trailer, pretending to inspect a box at the back. I couldn’t be a hundred percent sure about what provoked the argument between Jax and the blonde girl, but it seemed pretty obvious from what I’d heard that he was a total player. The girl had probably asked for some sort of commitment from him, and he denied her so he could keep hooking up with other girls.

I closed the box back up and lifted it into my arms. Once I knew I had a steady grip on the sides, I stood up, turned around, and—

“Oh!” I almost dropped the box at the sight of Jax standing in the trailer entrance.

His lips turned upward in a smug smile when he saw my stunned expression. He was clearly pleased with himself for frightening me.

I gulped as my eyes dropped from his face to his muscular arms and broad shoulders. God, he really was the perfect specimen of a man. He was only eighteen like me, but he could easily pass for a guy in his mid-twenties with that ripped body and perfectly angular face.

His arrogant smile faded as he stared over at me, slowly running a hand along the thick stubble on his jaw. I was rooted to the spot once more under his penetrating gaze, unable to move or look away.

After a moment that felt like an eternity, Jax finally stepped all the way into the trailer, heading straight for me with an easy swagger. His presence seemed to fill the whole space, sucking up all the air and leaving me breathless.

I cleared my throat and gave him a weak smile, cheeks still warm with embarrassment. “Hey, I’m sorry about before. I was just—”

He lifted a palm and cut me off. “Spying? I figured,” he said. His voice was like a roll of thunder on a stormy night. “Can’t say I’m too surprised, given who your family is.”

I bristled. “Excuse me? I wasn’t spying on you,” I said, even though I totallywasfor at least a minute, and we both knew it. “I was just grabbing some boxes so I can unpack them later.”

“Is that why you were crouched over there staring and drooling at the sight of my cock?” he said, gesturing to the front of the trailer.

Jesus. Was this guy serious? People didn’t actually talk like this in real life, did they?

“Um… you’re kidding, right?” I said, brows furrowing. “I couldn’t really see anything in the car apart from your face.”

His eyes narrowed. “Do I look like I’m kidding?”

Wow.He was actually serious.

“I told you, I was just unpacking, and the trailer happens to be right near your parking spot. I was only crouching near the door so I could pick up this box,” I said, indignant heat rising in my chest. My eyes narrowed. “Also, if you didn’t want an audience to that little show, then maybe you shouldn’t have sat in an open driveway where literally anyone could see your girlfriend blowing you if they happened to walk out of the house at the right time. Or should I saywrongtime, because believe me, no onewants to see that.”

My cheeks were burning now, and my voice had gone a little shaky at the end of my last sentence because it was a complete and utter lie. I liked what I saw earlier, and Jax knew it. I could tell by the cruel smirk that was creeping over his face.

I took a deep breath, cleared my throat, and spoke up again, trying to salvage the situation before it spiraled completely out of control. I didn’t want to get off on the wrong foot with the guy I was going to be living with for the next year.

“Look, I was just out here unpacking my boxes. That’s all, I swear,” I said. “I’m sorry I saw that stuff, okay? I’ll try not to let it happen again. By the way, I’m Kinsey. Kinsey Holland.”

“I know who you are. You should put that down,” he replied, dipping his chin toward the box in my arms. His smirk had morphed into a cold sneer.

I shook my head and mustered up another weak smile. “I’m fine. It isn’t heavy. But you can grab some of the bigger boxes over there if you really want to help.”

“I didn’t say it out of concern. I meant you should put that box down, close this trailer up, and take yourself and all your shit back to wherever the fuck you came from.”

My head jerked back slightly. “What?” I said, wondering if I’d just experienced a brief auditory hallucination. Surely Jax couldn’t bethatmad at me over my little foray into voyeurism. Like I told him a moment ago, if he didn’t want an audience, he should’ve taken the blonde girl somewhere more private. It wasn’t like I went out of my way to hunt them down for the sole purpose of watching them hook up. We just happened to be in the same place at the same time.

“You heard me,” Jax said, dark eyes flickering with malice. “You aren’t welcome here.”
