“Oh. Have you seen it?”
“Pictures. I had someone send me a few.”
Her eyes widened. “Someone broke into my apartment?”
“Yes, and it was pitiful how easy it was. He used his shoulder, and it popped open. He said he just leaned into it. It’s unsafe, baby.”
“So, I’ll never go back.”
He shook his head. “Are you okay with that?”
She was more than okay and nodded. “Yes.”
“Good. I already had them pack your things and take them to the condo we’ll stay at for the time being.”
Her mouth dropped open. “How did you know I’d say yes?”
He reached for her hand. “I was going to insist on you coming home with me. I want you where I can take care of you.”
“Oh.”
“How are your meals, sir?” the waiter said.
“Very good.”
“May I have a doggy bag, please?” she asked.
Cole sat back and narrowed his eyes at her.
Jade leaned toward him. “I’m not going to waste this meat.”
He rolled his eyes and watched the waiter put her food in a Styrofoam container and then a bag to carry it in before he took the plates away. He was back a minute later.
“Would you like any dessert tonight?”
They shook their heads. Cade handed the waiter a credit card. “No, just the check.”
The waiter came back a moment later and laid the black receipt book down. “Just sign it, sir, and leave it on the table. Thank you, and have a good night.”
“You, too,” Cole said. “Let’s get you home. I can tell you’re tired.”
She nodded. She was beyond tired but didn’t want to leave him even for a second.
They walked out of the restaurant and toward a big car at the curb.
When a man came around and opened their door, she looked up at him in surprise.
“Good evening.”
“Baby, this is Robert. He’s going to drive us home.”
“It’s nice to meet you,” she said. “My name is Jade.”
“It’s nice to meet you too, miss.”
“Get on in.”
She scrambled in and watched Cole stand up and slide into the car. The driver took the chair away, and she heard him put it into the trunk.
