Alexis came from nothing and was here on a scholarship, which means she’d be easy pickings. Mom always said those people are always hungry, and if you throw them a bone, no matter how small, they will fight over it. Since she seems to want in here so badly, I could use my position in the sorority to get her on my side. Jessica, I’m not so sure about. She seems more worldly than the other two and not like someone I could easily fool.

I turned my attention back to the three who were watching me as if I were losing my mind with my reaction to their incessant talk about that Lisa person and her stupid car. I noticed that their stares were more direct, with none of the fear I usually see in them when they piss me off.

I’m not sure if this is a new development or if I’d just been too uninvolved to notice before, but there seems to be a sudden shift in the air around here. I’ve always known that there were a few people who didn’t like me, and I never much cared one way or the other because those people were generally undesirables. People I had no uses for whatsoever.

But to see those same people gravitate to her the way they have been is beyond annoying. “What’s eating you? We’re not even talking that loud.” How dare she? I was ready to blast her, but Melissa walked into the room just then.

“Are you guys talking about Lisa’s new car? I hear it’s a beauty; I’m sorry I missed it. You guys didn’t take any pictures?” Of course, they had pictures; deplorable sycophants.

Since when is she so interested in cars? Melissa has always been the one everyone looked up to and aspired to be. She comes from old money, the kind my mom talks people out of every day. To see her fangirling over that Lisa person is something I could never get used to. And the way she seems to protect her even from the most innocent of questions makes me wonder what the other girl has on her.

There can be no other explanation for the way she just brazenly bends the rules for not only that Lisa person but those two societal rejects that seem to shadow her everywhere. I’d planned to avoid her like the plague, to ostracize her the way I have these three and some of the others lest they forget their place. I resent the hell out of the fact that sororities were now bound by new-age social standards to allow just anyone through their doors, but how could I when the leaders were always fawning over her?

The night before, I’d overheard someone make mention of the get-together some of the girls had had with her and Cody, news that these three were only too happy to share as they have been sharing everything else about her these days. I’d have thought they did it intentionally within my hearing distance, but they never seemed to be paying my presence any mind, so I can only surmise that they genuinely like her or more like they like what she can do for them if anything.

Even with all that, I have yet to find out anything pertinent about her. It’s as if she didn’t exist before she showed up here, something I plan to use against her once I get things in order. Mimi and Heather agree with me that there’s something fishy about her lack of social media presence and the fact that no one seems able to find out anything about her other than her scholastic fortitude.

Rumor has it that she’s some kind of genius, which I don’t see. Then again, she does have a bit of a nerdy look about her with that stupid short hair and those glasses she sometimes wears that make her look like an owl. I’ll never understand what Cody sees in her, never accept that he could genuinely feel anything for someone like her.

But that car! I’d looked it up as soon as I got back to the mansion. It costs more than mine; now I have to drive around in a stupid subpar vehicle while everyone drooled over hers. I wish I could ask dad for a new one, but he’d said this one was the last since I was about to graduate and would be on my own once I found a job.

It ate me up inside to see Cody drive off with her and to stand there listening to what everyone was saying about the new hot couple and how good they looked together in the stupid thing like this was high school or something. Thankfully no one noticed me there since I’d had the good sense to wear a disguise. No one would expect to see me in a ratty old baseball cap that I’d actually stolen from somewhere, so I was sure I was safe.
