"Ready?" Gabriel asked.
I sighed before getting up from my seat and walking outside with him and Ace into the late evening. It was only the end of the summer, and the sun still stayed up for a long time. While vampires were bothered by the sun's powerful rays, they only stung a little in our eyes, and it was nothing a pair of sunglasses couldn't fix.
"I'm driving," Gabriel said.
Three huge black Range Rovers stood a little further away.Great ... an escort, I thought. Gabriel was already over there taking the car keys from one of the drivers.
"Perfect," I said. "I had a death wish when I woke up today."
Gabriel just turned around and smiled, as he swung the keys around on his finger, but I didn't walk over to him, but to one of the other cars with Ace.
"Weaklings," he said and got inside his own.
I entered the car and leaned back in my seat and sighed deeply. I closed my eyes trying to forget where I was going, but it was hard not to think about it, and feeling Ace's pitch-black eyes on me did not help. I turned my head and looked at him.
"Yes?" I asked.
He looked at me for a little while, as he flipped a card around with his fingers. It looked so easy when he did it, but even if I started to practice now, I would never do it as smoothly as him.
"One word and we are out of there," he said.
"And risk offending the council? Good idea," I said sarcastically.
"They are forgetting who the hybrids are," he said darkly.
Ace had a darker past than most, and life meant very little to him. He didn't even mind killing the council filled with the most powerful wolves and vampires from all over the world if it meant they would stay out of our lives.
"I think they know, and I don't want to start an unnecessary war," I said. "Besides, one pup and they might just leave us alone."
"They will leaveyoualone. Then they will come for the rest of us."
I just smiled a little at that.
"Good luck."
Chapter 2
-Lara-
The party was huge!
My eyes were nothing but big circles as I watched the huge mansion, which was close to being a castle, in front of me. The taxi had stopped not far away, and I had walked the rest of the way up here, yet as I introduced myself to the greeters outside, they had asked me to take a different way in, which led me around the mansion and in from the side, where food deliveries were made and servers at the party came and went. I walked inside and into the chaos that happened in the big old servants' quarters. The place had history and was placed just outside of London. It had always been owned by a very powerful wolf family, and if you valued your life, you did not get in their way.
"I'm sorry, I am looking for …"
I tried speaking to one of the people that walked by me carrying the food inside the kitchen, but they just ignored me. Then I suddenly heard a sharp voice boom from further down the hallway.
"Not there! That goes outside! Now hurry!"
I walked a little closer, seeing an older woman in her thirties directing everyone and where to go and what to do. I knew if anyone knew where I should go, it would be her. I walked over to her; she was already directing some new servers to go outside where most of the people had gathered. It was too hot inside and there was a nice cool breeze tonight.
"Excuse me," I said.
The woman turned around and her sharp green eyes locked on me.
"What are you doing?" she asked.
I looked behind myself since I was uncertain if she was speaking to me. I had just arrived ... What was I doing? Was this a trick question?
