"Gabriel?" I asked as I poked my head out into the hallway.
It was dead quiet.
"Hey, who is it?" I asked as I started to walk towards the entrance of the mansion. "Gabriel?!"
I looked around confused, the door right open, but there was no one there.
"Okay, this game isn't funny," I said, turning around, feeling like something was breathing down my neck.
I walked over to the stairs leading up to the next floor, but I only placed my foot on the first step and then froze.
"Gabriel!"
Just then, I thought I saw something out of the corner of my eye, and I turned around, but there was nothing but the open door and the dark night outside. I walked over to the door, looked outside, and took the first steps down, before looking around the big open space in front of the house.
"Gabriel!"
"He isn't coming," I heard a dark voice say behind me.
I barely got a chance to turn around before a cloth dipped in chloroform was forced over my mouth and nose. A big arm snaked around my body and kept me from moving away, as a hooded figure kept pressing the cloth to my mouth. I tried not to breathe, but I had already taken in a big mouthful of air, as the cloth descended on me, and I slowly passed out in my attacker's arms, and all I could think was I needed Dominic!
Chapter 50
-Dominic-
It was late at night when I visited Alpha Aaron's house. Usually, wolves weren't really up at this time, but he understood this was when I worked, so he had stayed up, being the one to open the door and everything, as Ace and I appeared. He welcomed us inside the big mansion that had a lot of forest around it. I knew a few houses were built on the big territory too, where some pack members lived, while others lived in this house or the city nearby. You didn't need to live in the same territory to belong to a pack, that was how we did it in the old days before real cities were built and there was less forest to hide in.
Alpha Aaron made us follow him to his office further into the house, and I was surprised when it was only us three that sat down, and his beta or other close advisors he might have didn't join us, but no, it was just him. He looked rather stressed though. The white shirt he wore was unbuttoned at the top, and not tucked into his pants and his hair was a bit messy. He looked tired too, and I wondered what was going on. Had something happened to his family? I knew he had a mate and a son and a daughter who lived here too, or maybe it was some of his pack members who had gotten into trouble.
Alpha Aaron was part of the council, which meant he was quite a powerful alpha. I had never really had much against him, but I wasn't his biggest fan either. He was always so quiet at the meetings. I wasn't even sure how he felt about Lara being my mate. He seemed to just want to stay out of any of the discussions, and that was both a relief and quite annoying. I could always use the support when it came to Lara.
"You needed to see me," I said. "Now I am here."
Even after we had sat down, he remained quiet, and he even poured himself something to drink from the bottle of bourbon standing on his desk. He smelled a bit of alcohol, but I didn't believe he was drunk. Maybe a little tipsy, which only made me more annoyed. I would much rather be home with my sober mate.
"Aaron!" I said, done with formalities, and just wanting to know why I was there.
His blue eyes locked with mine and then he said:
"My destined mate was a human."
I watched him, surprised. His mate in this house was definitely not human, and while it was not uncommon to get mated to someone who was not your mate, you definitely didn't shout it out loud.
"Okay," I said.
"I tried leaving everything for her. I tried leaving my life behind, but I couldn't. This pack needed me, and what kind of person would I be if I abandoned everyone else for my own selfish reasons? And I couldn't really bring her with me. I was already mated to someone else, had a family with her, but I ... it broke me leaving her behind."
"Couldn't have been easy," I said, glancing at Ace, confused, who sat on my left.
He didn't show any sort of emotion, of course, but I could only believe he was a bit uncomfortable too.
"Her name was Laura. I met her when I was in England doing some business," he said.
"I'm sorry, why are you telling me this?" I asked.
"Because at the ball your friend Damon threw, I thought I saw her again," he said.
"And?"
