She turned to face him and met his gaze. ‘Why did you lie to me?’

‘About what?’

‘About saving my life. Leanne couldn’t have done it. Chest compressions with a dislocated shoulder? Really? It was you, so why did you lie?’

He broke her gaze and looked down at the ground. ‘Thought it might be awkward with you being the boss but being eternally grateful and thankful to me, like, forever.’

Kim burst out laughing. ‘You might get a mug of Colombian Gold but that’s about it. Anyway, thanks, and just be sure I’d have haunted the bloody life out of you if you’d failed to bring me back.’

‘Don’t doubt it for a minute.’

‘Right, glad we got that sorted. Come on, meet me back at mine.’

‘Huh?’

‘You’re helping me clear all the exercise shit out of my garage.’

‘And why would I want to do that?’

‘Cos that’s what friends do for each other, Alan. That’s what friends do.’
