He pressed the end button.

‘Thanks, girls. That was quite the performance.’

That should do very nicely indeed.

FORTY-NINE

Kim tore into the A&E department of Russells Hall Hospital not caring who was shadowing her in. If Symes had jumped up right in front of her, she felt sure she could have just tossed him out the way.

A quick glance over the walking wounded in the waiting area confirmed that no member of the Daynes family was present.

Shit, that wasn’t good.

‘Rachel Daynes…Hewitt,’ Kim corrected herself as she held up her ID.

The woman began tapping into a computer.

‘Recent hit and run,’ Kim clarified, drumming her fingers on the desk.

‘I’m not…Hang on…the system…’

‘Where’s her family?’ Kim asked.

‘I’m sorry…I’m not sure…’

‘Never mind,’ Kim said, realising she wasn’t giving the woman a chance to answer.

She headed through the double doors into the corridor that led to the cubicles. A nurse approached her.

‘Rachel Hewitt?’ she said, holding up the ID that was still in her hand.

The nurse glanced at the whiteboard and extrapolated information at lightning speed.

‘Come with me.’

Kim followed her beyond the curtained cubicles to a door marked ‘Private’.

She opened the door and three pairs of eyes looked Kim’s way expectantly.

The nurse shook her head and closed the door behind Bryant. Kim wasn’t sure exactly where they’d lost Leanne and she didn’t much care.

‘How is she?’ Kim asked as Zach dropped his head back into his hands. Gavin returned his gaze to the window.

Daryl turned vacant, tired eyes on her. ‘She’s in surgery. They’re trying to stop the bleeding.’

‘What happened?’ she asked, taking a seat beside him.

He shrugged. ‘I’m still trying to make sense of it. I got a call from the police to say she’d been involved in an accident, and she was on her way here. I called Zach, who said they’d tried to call her a couple of times. They dropped Mia off at my mum’s and came straight here. She was already in surgery, and then the police came, but that’s a good thing, isn’t it? That they got her into surgery so quickly? I mean, she’ll be fine, won’t she?’

‘Your wife seems like a very strong woman,’ Kim said, touching him lightly on the arm. She didn’t like the man, but he was clearly shell-shocked.

‘And what did the police say?’ Kim asked.

‘They asked if she’d been drinking. Onlookers said she was stumbling all over the place.’ He frowned as though that was what he couldn’t make sense of. ‘She never drank. She didn’t even like the taste of alcohol. Not even when cooking.’

Kim saw Gavin’s almost imperceptible nod of agreement.

‘Café owner only served her two lattes.’
