‘He’s only jealous anyway,’ Daryl said, nodding towards Reece.

‘You know it’s taking me all my effort not to leave the room, lock the door and let him do what he intended when he called you over here, so I wouldn’t bait him any—’

‘I didn’t even like her in that way, you sicko. She was young enough to be my kid. I just liked her. She was nice to me. We had a laugh sometimes, and she deserved someone a lot better than you, you despicable excuse for a man.’

Bryant couldn’t argue with a single thing Reece had said.

‘What was it about this family that appealed to you so much?’ Bryant asked. ‘You married their daughter. You moved in on the business, and you slept with their other daughter? Why would you do all that?’

‘You wouldn’t understand.’

‘Try me,’ Bryant said, folding his arms.

It appeared he’d found all the drama.

The guv was probably already having a cuppa with Gavin and Zach in the kitchen.

SEVENTY-TWO

Kim walked into William’s study and right into the barrel of a gun.

Too fucking late she realised the truth of what had been staring her in the face all week.

‘Close the door quietly behind you,’ Gavin said, taking one step back.

She did as she was told. Gavin nudged her forward with the end of the rifle.

Zach stood by the fireplace looking bewildered.

‘What the hell is going on, Gav?’ he asked as his husband positioned himself behind the desk.

Damn it, she had no chance of getting to him before he had the opportunity to take a shot, at either or both of them.

She kept her eyes on Gavin as she opened her mouth to explain to Zach the realisation that had just smacked her in the face.

‘Zach, meet Daniel Daynes. Your brother.’

Gavin’s upper lip curled in a half-smile as every ounce of colour dropped from Zach’s face.

‘What the hell? Are you…my b-brother?’

‘Not by blood,’ she clarified, taking Gavin’s silence as permission for her to answer his question.

Hurry up, Bryant, she silently prayed.

‘Go ahead, continue. He deserves to know the truth before I finish this once and for all. Unfortunately, there’ll be a murder I couldn’t prevent, as well as the inevitable suicide of a grief-stricken man, but there is only us in the room, and with you two dead, there’ll only be my version of events.’

He nodded towards Zach, urging her to continue.

‘Your parents adopted a child before you were born, before your mother was even pregnant with the two of you. It was a difficult pregnancy. She couldn’t cope. Her mental health suffered. She sent seven-year-old Daniel back to social services in favour of her natural children.’

‘No…it’s not true. Gavin is my h-husband.’

‘It is true, and legally he is your brother. You can’t annul an adoption unless the child is adopted by someone else, which never happened, did it, Daniel?’

‘Gav?’ Zach implored, desperate for any denial.

‘Carry on. You’re doing great so far.’
