Davey nodded.

‘Did you speak to her?’

‘No.’

‘Why not?’ Kim asked. ‘If the two of you were friends, why didn’t you stop and offer your condolences, ask her how she was?’

‘I was angry with her,’ he admitted. ‘I tried weeks ago to reach out to her. She blew me off. Told me she didn’t get involved in the business. Our friendship counted for nothing,’ he spat.

It was clear to Kim that the young man was still full of rage and that he was happy to dump it anywhere.

‘Something doesn’t seem right with what you’re telling us.’

‘You want the truth? She was crying. She didn’t see me cos she was crying, and if you must know, I was glad she was upset. I know how that sounds after what she’d lost, but I was pleased that she was hurting.’

Cold, uncharitable, uncaring; Davey Burston was all these things. He was being eaten alive by the rage at the injustice of his family’s loss. His anger was all over the place, waiting to settle on someone. He was fizzing like a shaken bottle of pop. That made him unpredictable. It made him volatile and dangerous, but did it make him a murderer?

She was prevented from asking any more questions as her phone rang.

She excused herself and headed for the roller shutter where Leanne stood sentry outside.

‘Go ahead, Penn.’

‘Court order is through for the doctor,’ he said.

‘Okay, thanks,’ Kim said, heading for the car. Finally, they could look at the treatment records for Helen Daynes.

‘One other thing, boss,’ Penn said quickly, before she ended the call. ‘I’ve been going through the Dayneses’ accounts and, before you go in there, there’s something you should know.’

SIXTY-FIVE

Kim had said little in the car after sharing what Penn had told her.

‘Got himself out of the shit with that one then,’ Bryant had said.

‘He wasn’t in any shit,’ she’d answered.

She’d spent the rest of the journey in silence while her mind computed everything she’d learned about Helen Daynes. There was a sadness growing within her as they headed back towards the office of Doctor Raymond Cutler.

He opened the door before she’d knocked it.

‘So you’re back,’ he said resignedly.

She nodded as the man stood aside for her and Bryant to enter.

‘I have the file ready,’ he said, pointing to a folder on the desk.

It was two inches thick and detailed Helen Daynes’s mental health from the time she was pregnant with the twins.

It also contained her secrets.

‘I don’t need it,’ Kim said, taking a seat.

Bryant turned her way in surprise.

Her silent time in the car had borne results.

‘Helen and William adopted a child before she fell pregnant with the twins.’
