“He barged in here with the most ridiculous accusations,” Danbury claimed, pressing a hand to his face, suddenly looking once again like the mild-mannered viscount.

Sebastian’s heart sank as he realized how this looked. How could he have let his anger get the best of him? He’d punched Blackstone’s brother in his own home. He’d be lucky if he didn’t go to jail for this. He turned to Jocelyn, saddened to see that she looked even more frightened than when he’d arrived. Had his violence disgusted her?

“You need to go home immediately... to your child,” he said firmly, determined to get her out of here before he answered for his actions. “Your nanny rang the station looking for you. Your son has a... rash. Something he ate perhaps?”

She played along, nodding jerkily, obviously glad to be able to escape the seething undercurrent of danger in the room. “Yes, I must go.” With one last lingering look at Sebastian, she turned and fled the room.

“Only a coward kills unarmed women,” Sebastian muttered darkly to Danbury the moment Jocelyn shut the front door behind her. “I won’t rest until you pay for what you’ve done.”

“Drake, rein in your man,” Danbury demanded, looking across the room to where his brother still stood in the doorway, his expression completely blank.

Sebastian had absolutely no idea what Blackstone would say next. Would he protect his brother, or did his loyalty still lay on the side of the law?

“Go on about your day,” Blackstone told Danbury at last. “I know that his actions have been inexcusable, but rest assured, I will handle my man.”
