He met my gaze and sighed. “For the thousandth time, yes.”
I snorted. It was hardly thousandth. Fifth or sixth was even a stretch. Still I sighed and tried not to let the passing time and silence continue to eat at my nerves.
The team of Steele’s friend sat on the opposite end of the table with their devices and gizmos, watching the security screens posted to the wall behind me and waiting to hit record on their little computer screen.
I groaned. “Charlotte certainly has her own timeline, doesn’t she?”
Spencer, Steele’s friend, said, “She could be today. Or she could wait until tomorrow.”
“It had better not be tomorrow,” Malachi said. “I don’t care to spend a minute in this place longer than absolutely necessary.”
“It might even be next week,” Spencer added. His lips stretched into a smirk, and I understood exactly what was happening.
“It will not be next week,” Steele said. He still sat with his arms crossed over his chest and his eyes closed.
“Weren’t you sleeping?” I asked.
“No,” he said.
I shook my head then settled my attention on Malachi. “You told her to come today, right?”
“I didn’t tell her anything. I hadn’t seen her since she left with the cops and her sob story,” he said.
“Can I at least go and see her?” I asked Spencer.
“No.” He shook his head and the top part of his pompadour shifted. I chuckled. If I could get him to keep doing that, I would be entertained, and the waiting wouldn’t be so bad.
Too bad he glared at me as I chuckled.
I cleared my throat and stood. “I’m going crazy.”
“Do so quietly,” Spencer said.
I paced the length of the room. “Yeah, yeah, yeah.”
Another half an hour later, Charlotte finally walked through the door.
A member of Spencer’s team said, “Target has entered the building.”
Spencer nodded and leaned forward on the table, keeping his eyes glued to the surveillance screens. “Stay on her.”
I almost held my breath.
“Audio ready,” Spencer said.
“Ready,” the woman said.
I joined everyone else on the other side of the table and watched as Charlotte approached the front desk. She flashed her million-dollar smile and was escorted back toward the cells. She was then left alone and faced Cassidy.
Cassidy stood and approached the bars. “Hello, Charlotte.”
Right on cue.
Spencer pointed at his teammate in charge of audio. She hit the button.
“We are live,” she said.
“What are you doing here?” Cassidy asked.
