She shook her head. “I refuse to sit and watch you three throw yourselves at my ex and get hurt. I won’t stand for it.”

“Then don’t watch,” Dallas said. “

“We’re hardly going to get hurt,” I added.

“We’re not letting you do anything else in your life with him hovering close by,” Steele said.

Cassidy sighed and settled her gaze on me. I nodded.

Xander’s days spent tormenting her were over.

CASSIDY

As it had turned out, Steele was right. I had forgotten all about my bath once the men had shared their news with me. The information they had was definitely important enough to interrupt my bath time, and I was glad they had persisted. Because what they had to say helped me to realize more than ever that I needed to be rid of Xander and fast.

Even more importantly, I needed to figure out a way off of Charlotte’s hit list. I hated the idea of what would happen the next time I bumped into her. Most especially because these men didn’t seem to want to leave me alone.

But the idea that I wasn’t going to be able to go home until this all blew over didn’t sit well with me. How could they expect me just to hit pause on my life? I was on the verge of losing my job solely because I chose to take this vacation. Delaying my return date wasn’t going to do me any favors much less make the situation any better or easier.

Sure, a part of me understood and appreciated the men were only trying to protect me and help me, but that didn’t mean my life needed to be put on hold while they took their time figuring everything out. I also wasn’t going to sit back and twiddle my thumbs while they put themselves in danger.

That wasn’t how I did things.

I didn’t much care for them putting their lives at risk for my sake, to begin with.

There had to be a compromise somewhere. If we worked together and looked hard enough, I was sure we would find one.

I shook my head. “Sitting around, doing nothing while you three risk it all isn’t how I do things. Nor is it something I’m okay with doing regardless. I also couldn’t stand around for days on end waiting for something that may never come. We need something better, because like it or not, I’m going home in a few days.”

I also realized I couldn’t be mad at them. Not really. Not when they are risking everything for my sake. And at the end of the day, I was happy to have them around me than not.

I took in a deep breath and sighed. “Any ideas?”

“We’re working on that,” Steele said.

My phone buzzed in the pocket of my robe. I grabbed it when I went back to the bathroom to cover myself with more than just a towel. I pulled it out of my pocket and glanced at the screen. It was a text from Maxine.

“Hey. I have some news to share Call me when you get the chance.”

I smiled. Talk about timing.

“What is it?” Malachi asked. His voice was a tad bit curious for my taste, but I also strangely didn’t mind.

“It’s Maxine,” I said.

“Who?” Dallas asked before I had a chance to explain.

“The friend from town,” Steele offered. He frowned. I had a feeling he wasn’t sure what to make of my new and psychic friend.

“What does she need?” Malachi asked, sitting up from the headboard and leaning forward, trying to peek at my phone. “What’s so bad about her?”

I pulled my phone away and glared at him. “Nothing is bad about her. And she also has news to share.”

“Theme of the day,” Dallas added.

“She wants me to call when I have the chance,” I said.
