“I know you are in there, Cassidy,” A voice other than Xander’s said. “Please let me in.”

It didn’t make sense that Steele stood on the other side of the door. I was relieved and then confused. But none of it mattered. I had put him in enough danger. And I knew better than to believe he convinced my ex to leave me alone for good. His insistence on being around me was only making things worse. He needed to leave me alone before he got himself seriously hurt… or killed.

“No. Go away,” I said. “Leave me alone.”

“Don’t be like that,” he said. Even filtered through the door his voice was sweet and soothing. “I promise I won’t hurt you. I only want to help.”

“I can’t,” I said, and it was hard to turn him away. I wished things were different. But they weren’t and wishful thinking didn’t help matters or save lives. “Just go away.”

“I have a key, you know,” he said. “I could just let myself in, but I would rather you let me in.”

I growled loudly. He wasn’t taking no for an answer, and I wasn’t able to figure out why.

“Let me in please,” he said, and I hated the sound of him begging.

“Fine!” I threw my hands into the air, stomped toward the door, and swung the damned thing open.

He leaned against the doorway, drinking me in with his soft green eyes. He smirked. “That is an interesting outfit.”

I looked down. I had on a dazzling, glittering, silver sequined tank that was half-tucked into the waistband of my grey sweatpants.

“I much preferred the bathrobe,” he said, stepping inside. His lips pulled over his teeth. “Or nothing at all.”

“Well, if you can’t tell, I’m in the middle of something.” I quirked an eyebrow. “What do you want?”

He took one look at the bags before setting his green eyes back on me. “I can see that. Are you going somewhere?”

“Yes, actually, I was planning on it until you showed up,” I said. “Now if you don’t mind, I’d like to continue those plans.”

He nodded and stepped deeper into the room, stopping as he stood in front of the bed. “That’s unfortunate.”

“What do you want?” I ask. “Make it quick because you shouldn’t be here.”

“Why not?” he asked.

I shook my head and pressed my lips into a thin line. “Nope, I have to go. I can’t risk him coming back.”

Frankly, I was starting to feel like there wasn’t a place I could go without him following me. Everywhere I turned he was there.

I sucked in a breath. It was another thing that played into Maxine’s reading. I still wasn’t convinced this whole thing wasn’t some sort of huge, twisted setup.

“Who is he?” Steele asked.

“My ex-boyfriend,” I said. “Please leave, before he comes back. You are not doing yourself any favors by underestimating him. He’s clever and will find a way to make you pay for that little demonstration. And I would hate for you to get hurt because of me.”

“He can try to hurt me if he really wants to.” He winked. “I’m tougher than I look.”

“Well,” I said. “So is he.”

“What did he want from you?” Steele turned around and sat on the foot of the bed.

I shrugged. “To take him back, probably. The same thing he’s wanted from me ever since I left him.”

I continued packing my clothes. If Steele was insisting on signing his death warrant, there was nothing more I could do. I certainly wasn’t going to stick around and watch it happen.

“How long ago did you guys break up?” he asked.

“Eight months ago,” I said and slammed shut one of my suitcases and zipped the thing closed.
