What’s he planning to do?
“Don’t worry, sir. I won’t jump you…yet.” Miyazaki smiled.
Teruo only hummed, not quite trusting himself to speak. Their closeness made him feel warm again and the hungry look on Miyazaki’s face had Teruo wishing they’d locked the damn door.
“So,” Miyazaki said, “does the superintendent know about—”
“I’m not out at the TMPD. I’m a very private person and I’ve kept my sexuality to myself. Koga Megumi, knows, but she’s the only one.”
“Have you and her been together?”
“Megumi and I are friends. We’ve known each other since police academy. We’ve been through a lot of stuff together in our younger days. She and I worked under Superintendent Yoshida years ago when he was a chief inspector.”
Miyazaki skimmed his hands over Teruo’s chest, moving them up his shoulders. “I was out to some coworkers I trusted and to my late superior officer. She knew a lot about my personal life. It’s not that I wanted to keep it a secret just that my relationships rarely came up in conversations.”
“I take it Superintendent Yoshida knows too?” Teruo asked, laying the foundation so he could ask how they knew one another.
“Yes, he does.” Miyazaki smiled. “You’re wondering why he sounded so informal earlier, correct?”
“Correct.”
“He’s a family friend, from years back,” Miyazaki said.
Teruo nodded. That explained the superintendent’s anger with HR’s gossip and his desire to keep Miyazaki working here. Most likely there was more to it, but Teruo wasn’t about to stick his nose into family business.
A pause lingered, then Teruo’s gaze met Miyazaki’s. The late morning sun reflected in his brown eyes and Teruo held his breath, remembering the dream he had. Teruo felt that strange sensation again, of something cold and intense beyond Miyazaki’s gaze. Teruo couldn’t explain this feeling; couldn’t understand it either. But it was magnetizing, keeping him rooted in place.
“May I be blunt, sir?” Miyazaki asked, suddenly.
Teruo snapped out of his reverie, then clicked his tongue. “That’s all you’ve been!”
Miyazaki chuckled. The pads of his fingers ran along Teruo’s shoulders, massaging the tense knots and Teruo relaxed under his touch.
“I wanted to propose we have somefuntogether—if you catch my drift,” Miyazaki said.
Teruo held his breath. Secretly, he’d been hoping for a proposal along these lines. He was tempted, but it was risky.
“It’s not that I don’t want to,” Teruo said. “First problem is that I’m your superior and it can be seen as an abuse of power. The second problem is that if Superintendent Yoshida finds out I’m sleeping with his protégé I’m done for.”
Miyazaki drew back a bit. “Protégé? Me? Since when?”
“Since he told me that if I scare you off, he’ll demote me.”
Miyazaki huffed. “He shouldn’t have said that,” he muttered. “I’m not his protégé and I won’t resign. I like my job and I like working with you. Besides, I doubt Superintendent Yoshida was serious. You’re his best homicide detective.”
“Yeah, one that’s very tempted to sleep with his subordinate officer.” Teruo shook his head, then took a drag from his cigarette and turned his head to exhale it. “If it gets in the way of our work—”
“It won’t.” Teruo gave him a skeptical look, but Miyazaki continued, “Tell you what. If you feel like it gets in our way, we’ll stop and never speak of it again. No hard feelings.”
Teruo didn’t want to never speak of it again. He wanted this. Just the thought of Miyazaki’s moans, his body pressed against Teruo’s was enough to make him hard. But it was such a bad idea to get tangled with his coworker.
Probably sensing his reluctance, Miyazaki shifted closer, his thigh touching Teruo’s and thumb tracing Teruo’s jaw. “How’s your sex life, chief?” he asked.
“There hasn’t been one in three years,” Teruo admitted. “There are spider webs down there.” He waved in the general direction of his groin. “And my right hand needs a vacation.”
Miyazaki smiled, amused. “So, what do you say? We work the same schedule, we’re both private people, we’ve already got acquainted with each other. I’d like to see what you’re hiding beneath these clothes.” He lowered his voice. “No one has to know. It’ll be our little secret.”
Damn it…Teruo’s brain insisted he saidno, but his lonely heart pushed foryes. Casual sex wasn’t a relationship but it would at least fill part of the void he felt. Right now, it was better than nothing.
