“Don’t I get a phone call?” I grasp at my one opportunity to get myself out of here.
Douche-cop 2 clears his throat. “You do.”
“I want to take it now. I want to call Oracle.”
“It’s the middle of the afternoon. Why do you want to call there?”
“My….” I hesitate on the word, “boyfriendworks there.”
We live together. Boyfriend seems appropriate. The cops study me carefully. One of them squints at me.
“He work security or something?”
“Or something,” I agree, not bothering to elaborate. They share an uneasy look. I’m pretty sure they have to give me my phone call.
“Keep it quick.”
I blow out a breath of relief as they walk me out to the payphone, stepping away to give me some imaginary privacy as I punch in the number for Oracle. I never got Niall’s phone number. How stupid is that. But I’ve never needed it. I’ll be getting it as soon as I see him.
Arthur answers the phone. Thank goodness he’s doing inventory today.
“Arthur,” I hiss down the line, not wanting to talk too loud. The douche cops are probably listening in. “Is Niall at the club?”
“The Reaper?” He seems surprised. “No. Do you need one of Seamus's crew? Because Connor Fitzpatrick is taking a delivery out the back.”
I chew on my lip. I don't know Connor. Not really. “Arthur. I'm at the police station.”
“Fuck, Mellie. What the fuck?” He sounds pissed now.
“Not by choice,” I tell him drily. “This is my one phone call.”
“Shit,” he mumbles. “I'll tell Connor.”
“Tell him I want Niall to come and get me.”
Arthur hesitates again. “Are you sure about that, Mellie?”
Oh, for fuck’s sake. I know what I'm asking. I want to bring a world of pain down on these fucking assholes. I want my Reaper.
“Positive,” I snap down the line. “Niall, or no one.”
NIALL
Connor strolls into Seamus's office after the briefest of knocks, his face like thunder.
“Lucky, what's going on?” Seamus looks up at his cousin. “Everything okay with the shipment?”
“The shipment's fine,” he says stiffly, casting a curious glance my way. “Arthur just took a phone call from the police station.”
Seamus does a double-take. “Someone called the club from the police station?”
“Mellie,” Connor admits, looking my way again. Seamus looks at me as well as I let out a rumbling growl. Why is Mellie calling from a police station?
“What did ye say?”
Connor turns to face me. “Arthur said Mellie is at the police station. She used her phone call to ring here, asking for you. Says she wants Niall or no one.”
I'm out of my seat and striding out the door. Fury floods my system that she's been arrested, but I'm also smug as shit that she wants me to come and get her.
