They didn’t. Instead, they kept bitching back and forth.

“Yeah. The Chronis bitch is out of the way. That’s a good thing.”

Luca’s jaw ticked, and his hands fisted at his sides. “But she died on my property. Why would you tell them to do it there?”

Marco took a step back, his forehead furrowing.

“Are you trying to fuck me over?” Luca took a menacing step toward him.

“No!” Marco raised his hands in defense. “I told them to go get her, but apparently, Tootsie made trouble.”

“Yeah, because he had orders to keep her safe until I said otherwise.”

“Well, he should’ve fallen back when Tony told him they were bringing her to me. I was doing you a favor. It’s been months, and you weren’t handling the bitch.”

“You didn’t do shit. You sent those idiots to kill an innocent woman. And now Tootsie is dead!”

Marco swallowed but didn’t back down this time. “They were supposed to bring her to Jeff City. Things got out of hand.”

“Yeah, two soldiers killed a capo—our fucking cousin.”

“And I’m sorry about that. But what the fuck was he doing protecting a Chronis to the death?”

The two men silently stared at one another, their chests rising quickly.

“I’m sorry, what?” My brain was in a full tailspin.

They both turned toward me, their hands resting on their holstered guns until they saw it was me.

“Jesus, Sasha. Why didn’t you say something sooner?” Luca’s hand brushed through his hair.

“Oh, I’m sorry,” I said, standing from the couch. “I should’ve just shouted my way into the convo.”

“You shouldn’t have heard any of that.” Marco frowned, his fingers still hovering over his side piece.

“Lower your hand or lose it.” Luca gritted out.

Marco’s arm immediately fell, and he took a step toward the door. “It’s been a long night, and things are tense. Let me go handle the twins and the cops. You stay here.”

“Why should I trust you to handle this? As it is, I may go down for a double homicide.”

Marco rubbed his jaw. “I know things look shady, but I would never do that to you.” He reached for the doorknob. “Trust me.”

Luca glared but let Marco leave without another word.

I rounded the couch and met Luca in the entryway. “What the hell is going on?”

“Everything’s going to shit.” Luca sighed and pulled me to his chest.

“Is Tootsie really dead?”

“It seems that way. They haven’t gone through the ashes yet, but I’m guessing they’ll find a couple of bodies. It’s how I would’ve handled it.”

I bit my lip, unsure whether or not to believe it. “I talked to Tootsie just a few hours ago. He said they got away.”

Luca blinked rapidly. “Why would you be talking to him? Damn it, Sasha!” He let me go and stalked over to the couch.

“I thought he should know what I heard.”
