I looked between the two of them. “Why aren’t you guys staying in the main?”

“We aren’t—”

Zoe said at the same time Tootsie said, “That’s Luca’s room.”

I smirked. They were banging or would be soon. Lucky sons of bitches had this whole banging paradise to themselves. “Well, I guess I’m heading to bed.”

“Night.”

“Night.”

I peeked my head in every room until I reached the last door. My interior design heart nearly stopped. The room was the perfect balance of rustic charm and decadent elegance. I wasn’t usually a fan of so much wood in a room, but with the lighting and décor, I would’ve been happy to spend time there, especially if I was trapped with Luca.

The adrenaline I’d rode throughout the day petered out when I caught sight of the glorious bed. I snapped a quick picture and sent it to Axel. A little treat for him to wake up to.

Calls and texts from Luca continued to roll in, but I had zero interest in talking over the phone. I wanted to tear into his ass face-to-face.

As soon as my head hit the pillow, I fell asleep. Early the next morning, I woke up to my phone vibrating in my hand.

AXEL:Who made the frame? Where are you?

AXEL:Get the name of the craftsman.

AXEL:I’m serious.

I didn’t respond. He woke me up so he could wait. Exhausted, I shuffled downstairs. Tootsie stood at the counter, sipping from a mug.

“What’s the point of drinking that?” I grumbled. The fact that Zoe didn’t drink caffeine was a huge red flag for me. The woman wasn’t normal.

“This is the good shit.” He jerked his chin toward the coffeepot.

“You’re an angel.” The early morning light streamed through the windows, creating a warm glow throughout the cabin as we drank our coffee in peace. As I poured a second cup, I glanced at the stairs and asked, “Does Zoe know about her dad?”

Tootsie sighed, sitting on a tall barstool on the other side of the counter. “No.”

“Don’t you think she should know?” I leaned my hip against the counter, checking the stairs again.

“Yes, but what good would it do right now? It’s not like she can just run home. It’s not safe for her.”

I scoffed. “So, your solution is not to tell her? What happens when shecango home?”

“Then I’ll tell her.”

I shook my head and put my mug down. “She’s going to hate you for keeping this from her.”

“She’ll get over it.”

“Jesus. You really believe that?”

“I can help her through it. I just need some time. We need to figure out who in her family wants her dead.”

“Not to mention, keep her from the entire Moretti family.”

Tootsie grimaced. “At least Luca’s on our side.”

Our side. They had a side.

I rolled the words around in my head. Tootsie was in deep, and I wasn’t sure how this could end well for either of them.
