“Why did you leave?”

He tilted his head, his lips thinning as he considered me. “I think hearing you talk about Dimitri, and knowing you were right, fucked with my head. I mean, he’s a harmless fucker, and I am, well, the fucking Butcher. Of the two of us, I’m clearly the bad guy. Add to that some business I had to handle, and it was better for me to go.”

I leaned my forearms on the edge of the desk, the desire to be closer to Luca driving me to go to him, but if we touched, the talking would stop. “You’re a good man.”

“No, I’m not.”

I blew out a breath. “Fine. I should say you’re good to me. I know you would never do anything to hurt me.”

“But that doesn’t mean you won’t get hurt. And it doesn’t help that Dimitri feels comfortable enough to approach you. He may not be a killer, but his brother is.”

“I promise to walk away next time, okay?”

He sighed, his fingers dragging through his hair. “I feel like I’m ruining your life. I don’t want to be that guy.”

“You’re not ruining my life. You make it infinitely better.”

“You have an answer for everything, huh?”

“Have you met me?”

He leaned back in his chair, his legs spread. “You’d tell me if you wanted out, right? Because once we’re married—”

“I won’t—”

“Being a Moretti is dangerous and as far from a normal life as you can get. You wouldn’t be the first person to want out.” He grimaced. “The last thing I want is for you to feel trapped. I’d do anything for you, even if it meant letting you go.”

Rolling my eyes, I stood and went to him. “Stop trying to push me away.” I stepped between his legs and ran my fingers through his hair. “I’m here because I want to be.”

His eyes shut, and his frown disappeared. “Okay.” He took a deep breath and opened his eyes. “I believe you. I’m sorry I left you to deal with that detective alone. Frankie said you took care of him quickly.”

“Yeah, it was no big deal.”

“The fact you can say that lets me know—”

I yanked his hair. “Shut up. Just shut the fuck up. No more of this bullshit.” I dropped to my knees. “Aren’t you tired of having this conversation? I’m the one that came back to you. Stop thinking I have one foot out the door. You’re stuck with me.” Before Luca could stop me, his belt was on the floor, and his hardening cock was in my hand. “Now, if you’re done being a martyr, I’d like you to fuck my face.” I smiled sweetly. “Please.” Without waiting for a response, I put him in my mouth, sucking and licking until he was completely hard.

He tangled his fingers in my hair, his hips surging up. I gagged, but he didn’t stop. His thighs flexed under my fingers, and I dug my nails in, giving as good as I got.

Luca was moaning, mumbling something incoherent when the door swung open, smashing into the wall. I fell backward on my ass as Luca sprung up, pulling a gun from thin fucking air and pointing it at the intruder.

Mr. Big and Bald quickly shut the door, locking it before turning to Luca. His eyes widened when he saw Luca in all his gun-toting, erect glory. “Sorry, Boss. There’s been an altercation, and we’re securing the inside. Should only take a moment.”

Luca lowered his gun. “What kind of altercation?”

The bouncer glanced at me, his eyebrow hitching up for a moment. Schooling his features, he looked back at Luca. “Someone took a shot at Aldo. We lost the guy down an alley, and then a car rounded on outside security and squeezed off a few rounds. Angelo caught a bullet in the arm, but other than that, everyone’s fine.”

Luca’s body stayed loose as he set the gun on the desk. “Cops?”

“Outside. I told them I had to check to see if you were here.”

“Good. Give us a minute. I’ll be right out.”

The bouncer left without another word.

Luca turned around, and my breath stuttered. The lighting was dim, creating shadows around his eyes. His sharp jaw was tensed, and his lips pursed. I stared up at him, not sure I recognized this version of my fiancé.

He extended a hand, and I jumped. Not out of fear. Okay, maybe a little, but it was more out of an instinctual understanding that this man was not the careful playmate I’d initially fallen in love with. This was the shadow—the creature who was capable of extreme violence.
