Before I could deny, deny, deny, Rosa added, “Luca told me they’ve been trying.”

I shook my head, but the moms were too busy smiling with hearts in their eyes to notice my frown or plea that it wasn’t true.

I should’ve told him I was still taking the pill.

“Well, that’s a spot of sunshine in the storm.” Mom brushed the hair off my face. “Everything will be okay, honey.”

“From your lips to God’s ears,” I mumbled, resting my head against the wall.

EPILOGUE

“I’m sorry, ma’am. Visits are limited to Mr. Moretti’s legal counsel.”

I’d been told the same thing every day since Luca's bail was denied.

“It’s been two weeks. Any idea when he’ll be allowed visits from family? I’m his wife.” It was the first time I’d tried throwing around my weight as the boss’s wife, but if the look on the guy’s face was anything to go by, it didn’t mean shit.

He clicked around, and the grimace on his face told me I wasn’t going to like what he had to tell me. “I don’t know if I should tell you this.” He looked up through the plexiglass partition.

“Please,” I begged.

“Mr. Moretti’s been allowed visitors since the day after he arrived. He set his visitor list to just his legal counsel.”

“Ah.”

“I’m sorry, Mrs. More—”

I raised my hand. “It’s not your fault. Thank you for letting me know.”

Stepping out into the July heat, I wiped under my eyes before putting on my sunglasses. My heels clicked across the hot asphalt as I walked across the parking lot to my huge SUV—a wedding gift Luca had insisted on. The trip inside had been so short that the leather was still cool when I slid inside.

Tossing my keys and purse on the passenger seat, I sat there, staring at the jail until the heat inside of the vehicle became unbearable. With no plan, I turned on the car. The air conditioning blew my hair from my face as I reached for my phone. I needed answers. As I waited for Marco to pick up, the news cycle started with yet another story about Luca.

Muting the stereo, I muttered, “Fucking talk radio.”
