I slowly sat back in my chair, giving them the floor.

“I’m an FBI agent,” Daphne whispered.

Blinking, I waited for more, but apparently, that was supposed to be shocking. “Oh, I know.”

Daphne’s tan face took on an ashen color as she looked at Dimitri with panic in her eyes. She licked her lips and turned back to me. “How?”

“You really want to talk about that right now?” I peeked at Frankie, and thankfully he was wrapped up in whatever Warren was saying. “I suggest you get to the point before Frankie notices or Ashley comes back.”

Dimitri’s lip curled. “You need to get away from these people, Sasha. Luca will be arrested. It’s just a matter of time. And with the nature of his relationship with Zoe, there is talk of bringing you in for questioning. They think you’re an accomplice.” He gazed at me, his usually cold, gray eyes full of concern. Daphne observed him, the corners of her mouth pulling down.

I stayed silent. It was news that I was being investigated as an accomplice, but the other stuff I already knew.

“Are you listening? You’re being investigated like a criminal, and they have an eyewitness placing you at the cabin days before the fire.” Dimitri was getting more agitated.

Determined to hide how much I was freaking out, I pressed my lips together. Dimitri and I were no longer the kind of friends that confided in one another. He seemed to have missed the memo because he looked at me expectantly, his hand inching toward me.

“Damn it, Sasha!” His voice was strained, the tendons in his neck popping. “I don’t want to see you lose your freedom because ofhim. Let me help you.” His hand touched my arm, and I shrunk away. Hurt flashed in his eyes as his fingers curled into a fist, landing on the table with a soft thud. “You’re really choosing him.” He swallowed thickly.

“Dimitri.” Daphne’s voice made him flinch. When he looked at her, it was like he’d forgotten she was there. She lifted her chin, her shoulders tensing. “We told her. It’s up to her how she wants to handle her life.”

He glanced at me one more time, studying me like it would be the last time we saw each other, then he nodded. They both stood, and Daphne walked toward the door while Dimitri stopped and came back to the table, bending to bring us face to face. “If you change your mind, I will always come for you.” He cupped my cheek, placing a quick kiss on my lips before rushing out of the restaurant.

I touched my lips, confused by what had just happened.

“Are you okay?” Ashley asked as she sat.

“I think so?”

She glanced at the door. “Who was that?”

I checked the bar, and Frankie was gone. “Um. Dimitri and Daphne.”

“Weird.”

“Yeah.” I paused as Frankie stormed back into Moretti’s, glaring at me. “You know what? I’m getting really tired of people fucking with me.”

“Okay?” Ashley gently set down her drink. “What do we need to do?”

“There’s no we. I need to start pushing back. I can’t let these fuckers take everything I want away from me.”

NINETEEN

“Luca?” I yelled the minute I walked through the front door, Frankie hot on my heels.

“Why didn’t you come and get me?” Frankie shot back.

“Why didn’t you notice a Chronis in Moretti’s? Luca!”

Frankie scoffed, and Luca came out of the kitchen.

“What’s going on?” Luca caught me by the shoulders and looked me head to toe. “Are you hurt?” His eyes hardened as he glared over my head at Frankie. “What the fuck happened?”

“Dimitri Chronis crashed Sasha’s dinner with Ashley.” Frankie leaned against the wall, an ugly scowl on his face.

“At Moretti’s?” Luca’s grip on my arms tightened.

“Yeah. And she didn’t let me know when they sat down. I caught sight of the asshole as he was leaving. They were gone by the time I got out to the street.”
