“Got it covered.” He lifted the bags. “You want some?”

Rosa screwed up her face. “Sushi? No, thank you. I’ve already eaten. Let’s get you inside.”

Luca set us up in the kitchen, much to Rosa’s disapproval.

Dinner should be eaten at a proper table.

Once we were alone, I put down my chopsticks and stared at Luca until he noticed. He gave me a sad smile, wiping the corner of his mouth. “Are you not hungry?”

“Who?”

“Sasha, I don’t—”

“Tell me.”

Luca cleared his throat, tossing his napkin on the table. The sorrow etched on his face turned my stomach. “It was Pete.”

I sagged in my chair, the air whooshing out of me. My vision blurred with tears as I tried to make sense of what Luca said. “Pete?” I croaked out.

There was no way Pete was dead.

Luca came around the table, pulling me out of the chair and into his arms. “I know, baby. I’ll handle it.”

“What about Maria?” I sobbed into Luca’s chest.

“Marco’s over there right now with Maria and Mrs. Abate. Once you’re done eating, I’m going over there.”

“I’m done.” I leaned back and wiped my eyes. “Let’s go.”

Luca’s eyebrows pulled together as he wiped a stray tear away with his thumb. “You want to go?”

“Of course! Maria will need all the support she can get. If you’re going, I’m going.”

“Thank you.” Luca kissed me softly. “It’ll mean a lot for you to be there.”

I swallowed, trying to clear the lump in my throat. “Pete’s gone.”

Luca pulled his top lip between his teeth and nodded.

“Who would do that?” It was a stupid question. Lots of people wanted Pete dead. Lots of people wanted Luca dead. Hell, lots of people wanted me dead.

Fuck ‘em.

“Never mind.” I cleared my throat and slid out of Luca’s hold. “We should box this up for later.”

I started moving food back into containers as Luca watched me. “You know I love you, right?”

All I managed was a tight-lipped smile as I scooped up a rainbow roll. My phone buzzed in my purse. “Can you get that?”

Luca dug through the junk in my bag until he found it. Frowning down at my phone, he muttered, “What the fuck is this?”

I licked eel sauce off my thumb before folding the box closed. “What is it?”

“An unsaved number texting you.” He tapped on the screen. “For the second time. Why didn’t you mention this?”

“Oh shit! I totally forgot.”

“How do you forget this, Sasha?” He waved my phone at me. “Z&T? Have you been in contact with them? Have you known they’re alive all along?” Luca’s face turned red, his voice getting louder and louder.
