“About?”

“Rachael,” she whispered, though it was hardly necessary. No one was listening to us here on the edge of the deck.

“And what am I supposed to be talking to him about?”

“Staying away from her.”

“Ahhh,” Hudson addressed me. “Stay away from Rachel.” Then to Min. “How did I do?”

He didn’t wait for her to respond, “Sucky,” before heading inside for her refill.

“Text her,” I said. “Invite her over.”

Min’s jaw dropped. “Are you kidding me right now? I just told you to stay away from her, and you think I’m going to text her? Seriously, you’re demented.”

Avoiding glancing at her phone, which sat on the armrest of the Adirondack chair, I sat up as if hearing something from inside. “Did you hear that? I think Hudson wants you.”

Min leaned forward and peered inside the open windows. “What? Why?”

Just go Min. Do it.

I rolled my eyes. “Come on, you can’t figure that out?” I said, suggestively enough that Min took the bait. I honestly didn’t think she’d fall for it. But my sister popped out of her seat and practically ran inside. Knowing I didn’t have much time, I snagged her phone, typed in the code she didn’t keep very secret, and got to work. Praying Hudson kept her occupied, I got the text off and put Min’s phone back just in time.

Min and Hudson returned, my sister looking at me strangely. “He didn’t call me.”

She sat back down as Hudson moved a chair over to us.

“No? I swear I heard him call your name.”

Still suspicious, Min sat. Two seconds later, her phone dinged. I braced for it.

Grabbing it, she read the text. Her head snapped back up, Min’s eyes, furious.

“You are such an asshole.”

I tossed up my hands. “Guilty as charged.”

“What did he do?” Hudson asked.

“He used my phone while I was inside to text Rae to ask her over.”

Hudson tried, unsuccessfully, not to laugh. He raised his beer to me. “Smooth.”

“You are really taking his side? He broke into my phone and pretended to be me.” She didn’t wait for Hudson to reply before blasting me again. I just wanted to know what Rae said. “How would you like it if I broke into your phone and started texting all your booty calls?”

I thought about that for a second. “Depends. What would you say to them?”

“Oh my God. I can’t even,” she turned completely to Hudson who was still trying to stifle a grin. “I think I liked it better when you two hated each other.”

“I never hated Marco,” Hudson said. “Just the other way around.”

I couldn’t disagree with the man when he only spoke the truth. “Sorry about that,” I said, having apologized many times before. I truly was a shithead to him though, so I didn’t mind eating some crow pie.

Min stopped chastising me long enough to text Rae back. Shooting me another look, she put her phone down and took a sip of wine.

“Well?” I asked when she wasn’t forthcoming with any information. “Is she coming?”

Min smiled extra sweetly at me. “That’s for me to know and you to find out.”
