Page 32 of Horizontal Tasting

“What next?” I asked, pretending I didn’t want to tear her clothes off. I tried to remember a time when I wanted a woman this badly. Honestly, I couldn’t do it. There was something about her...

“Do you have the oak-aged chard?”

“I do.”

By the time we got through each of the wines, I was struck by how much she knew. Not that you could become a level three without having a clue, but still.

“Which one are you going to get?” I asked. The tasting came with a full glass, although with one word to the attendant, I’m pretty sure she could get more than that.

“The sangiovese. You?”

“I’ll do the same.”

Now at the south end of the lake, having ordered our wines, we moved from the bar to the side of the boat. Sitting in what could only be described as a romantic setting—even by someone who didn’t believe in romance—we watched the sun dip below the lake.

“Why didn’t you tell her who you were?” I asked, now firmly outside of ear range of the attendant.

“I didn’t want her to be nervous. I’ll introduce myself properly when we’re done.”

I watched as Rae sipped her wine. “Thoughtful of you.”

“I’m a thoughtful person.”

“You sure you’re a lawyer?”

Rae gave me the side-eye. “We really do have a reputation, don’t we?”

“Some of it warranted, some not.” Not unlike my own.

She sighed. “I agree. I think that’s why I don’t fit in. I worked in a law firm in college and loved it. But law school was totally different.”

“What didn’t you like about it?” A slight shrug of her shoulders and sip of wine answered for her. “It just wasn’t you.”

“Exactly.”

I noticed Isaiah glaring at me out of the corner of my eye. I’d mostly avoided him, but the guy really wasn’t a fan.

“What did you do to his sister?” Rae asked.

“Nothing, I swear. Just broke up with her.”

“He seems awfully angry for a guy whose sister just dated someone. Did you go out for a long time?”

“Nah. A few weeks”

She frowned. “You say that like someone who doesn’t ever go out with someone for a long time.”

“I don’t.” The answer was automatic because it was true.

Belatedly I remembered that might not be her ideal situation. “Do you?”

“Date men for a long time?”

“Yeah.”

“I guess. I had a boyfriend for more than three years. Another for almost two.”

“What happened?”
