“Mikey, that’s beautiful.” Lauren wipes a tear from the corner of her eye. “A bit cheesy, but in the best way possible.”
“I’ll work on it,” I promise with a chuckle before pressing my forehead to hers. “I don’t want to forget Naomi, Lore.”
“I’d never want you to.”
“I know,” I hurry to reassure her. “I know. But you… God, Lore,you. I never believed I could feel so strongly about someone again. Some people never find it once, and I got a second chance. It scares the crap out of me.”
“I’m here, Mikey. I got you,” she whispers, and I laugh.
“That’s my line.” I raise an eyebrow with a grin.
“Are you going to sue me for plagiarism?” She flashes me a sassy grin, and I catch her bottom lip between my teeth. Lauren pulls me close, slanting her lips over mine with a contented sigh.
“Lauren?” I whisper, my heart thudding wildly when I suddenly realize how long it’s been since the words left my mouth and wondering if I can even still say them.
“It’s okay,” she whispers, stroking my cheek. “I know.”
And her tender care and loving stare are all it takes to give me that final push.
“I love you,” I blurt out, exhaling sharply after I do, then laughing and shaking my head in reproach. “Okay, let me do that again.” I clear my throat, looking up into Lauren’s sultry bedroom eyes and cupping her face, running my thumb over her cheek. “Lauren Banks, I love you.”
“I love you too, Michael.” She presses her lips to mine. “I’m still not marrying you, though.”
“We’ll see, Rockstar,” I reply with a grin, palms smoothing up her thighs. “I’ll convince you.”
“Bring it on, Cupcake,” Lauren dares me with a sassy grin of her own, fingers tangling in my hair and pulling me in for a kiss that makes my heart beat that much faster.
