“Aw,” her mother said, dragging out the syllable. She smiled, and her eyes danced. “You two are so sweet.”

Lindsay forced a smile. She loved her parents and felt guilty that she wasn’t enjoying their visit more. But she just wanted to get back to her dorm and be alone. She had studying to do.

“How is the reelection going?” Landon asked her father.

Lindsay suppressed a groan. He’d only asked because he was fishing for a congratulations.

It worked.

“It’s going well, and congratulations on your election!” Her father sounded sincere. Maybe he even was. He really liked Landon.

“Thank you, but student government is small potatoes compared to where we’re going.” He squeezed Lindsay’s shoulders again. “Isn’t that right, honey?”

She didn’t say anything.

Her mother was still smiling. “That’s right. I’m so proud of your both. Can’t wait to see what your future holds.”

“You know what it holds, Mom. You’re the one who planned it.”

Everyone laughed. Everyone but Lindsay.
