Chapter 30

It was the best dinnerof Samantha’s life. Every bite was a fantasy come true. She didn’t know if she’d ever be able to enjoy ordinary food again. She was too full to finish the main course. “Do you think a place as fancy as this has doggie bags?”

Brent laughed and put his fork down. He hadn’t finished either. “I don’t think we should use the phrase doggie bags. Let’s just ask for a box. Oh, by the way, though. I do have a dog now.”

“You do?” She was stunned. She’d wanted to get a puppy way back when, and he wouldn’t even consider it.

“I do. And if you don’t like him, then I’m afraid this isn’t going to work out.”

She laughed. “Tell me about him.”

“Well, his name is George, and he’s a senior basset hound.”

Wow. He’d gone the opposite direction from puppy. “Did you name him George?”

Brent nodded. “I sure did. Wait till you meet him. He really acts like a George.”

She wrinkled up her nose. “I’ve heard basset hounds can be stinky.”

Brent’s face registered horror. “How dare you! There is not a stinky hair on George’s body!”

She narrowed her eyes. “You must bathe him regularly.”

“I do, yeah.”

They both laughed.

“Hey, so I know you’re full, but I still think we should order dessert.”

“Brent, I can’t.” Some people who quit drinking turned to food instead. She didn’t want to be one of those people.

“Did you see that Dean’s Sweets are on the menu?”

She gasped. “I didn’t! Are they really? That seems so random!”

He laughed. “Maybe it’s a nod from God.”

She laughed too. Her face was starting to hurt from laughing so much. “Yeah, maybe it is. Speaking of Dean’s, I couldn’t believe how amazing that particular gift was. Did you see that box?”

He nodded. “I saw it online but not in person. Are the chocolates good?”
