I don’t know what made me, or even why I say it. But it only makes his rugged features shift into what I guess is a pleased expression.
Satisfied.
The crease at the edge of his mouth curling into a knowing grin as his eyes narrow.
His Hollywood smile and dammit, that cock sure attitude that’s bigger than he is, but not by much…
I guess I’m peeved that people like this are even real in the first place.
Double peeved I sprang from a totally different gene pool that didn’t hand out high metabolism and what looks like an amazing dental plan.
“I would. If you’d let me do that,” he retorts instantly, throwing me off guard in a voice so deep, so unbelievably sexy that my only reply is a squeak.
He says it like a man who knows what he wants and has just been shown exactly how to get it.
Kinda smug, like his attitude but more satisfied that like everything else he’s probably ever wanted, he’s gonna have it too.
Just has to reach out with one of his huge hands and pluck it. All for himself.
Whatever the ‘it’ is in his mind.
It can’t be me.
Couldn’t be.
Could it?

Harry
True to his word, my ex-boss Cpt. Frank Horovitz picks me up and informs me we’re heading to the morgue first.
“We can deal with theother thinglater,” he says in a low tone, meaning the part about how it’s his job to question me as a witness as well as a suspect in the case.
Almost whispering it as if he’s worried someone else might hear in the eighteen square feet of his car’s interior.
“And it’s good to see you prepared, Harry.Goodto see you!” he adds, noting my bag. Everything I need to hit the ground running, go anywhere.
That’s always been me.
“Just wish it was under different circumstances… And I have to remind you not to leave town, not until our preliminary investigations… Ah hell. Just don’t go making a noise, Harry. Got it?” he says gruffly.
Holding my eyes in his for a moment.
The ‘other thing’ being me as a suspect as well as a witness, and all the protocols that would normally go with that have been paused.
Muted.
But only as long as they can be.
Frank’s a straight shooter and will work off the record, but only go so far.
Especially anything to do with me.
See, I left the force with honors. But deep down I always knew I’ve always been the subject of a different kind of investigation. The federal kind.
A cop comes outta nowhere, ears still shiny and wet from the Academy and starts solving heinous crimes one after the other, almost predicting them before they happen?
